I can get good sized endeavour or king prawns for less than $20 a kilo and I there is no way one of those little crays is any heavier than 450 to 500g so in reality you are paying $40 a kg for something that isn't as good to eat as prawns or even a nice bit of fish.
I fished professional for crays here in the West for many years so I have a pretty good idea of what they taste like.
The WA crays are better than the painted or green tropical lobsters But they pale in comparison to the Southern rock lobsters.
    Exactly!

The large (farmed in Oz) tiger prawns at woolies are good value too.

Actually it's way north of $30 these days after the Vic industry was moved to quota management in 2000, investors moved in and leasing quota became somewhat widespread.

Even the remaining (non leasing) owner operators need maybe twice that to even think about going to sea.

The local prawn trawlers give you a good deal. Especially if you can weld a bit. Old mate Karl the crabber put me on to it. He is deceased now, but he had one of , if not the first prawning licences in the southern gulf. He was also one of the fishermen interviewed about the " hopper " sorting devices for nets. Karl told me he developed the Turtle exclusion device for nets , here in QLD. He was an old fisherman, but he wouldn't tell tall tales [ would he ? ] His name is in the ' acknowledgments' in the beginning of this hand book. Karl had a 42 feet lobster boat [ see, on topic] bought up by truck from S. A. and then roped his' mates 'into completely refitting into a pleasure boat. He named it' HENTY', there is some S.A, history there. I'd better not start, too many stories to tell, about a QLD fishing legend.

Oh before I finish, Another old mate used to have these disgusting mutton birds sent up, from Tassie, and called them a delicacy. I can't remember when he lost his mind. Now if it had been Abalone, there's a delicacy! When on Bass Strait oil rig patrols, we used to anchor at a group of islands just to the North of Tassie, our divers would go out , get some ab's, we would prepare them, and cook them on the BBQ provided by a local Yacht club. The preparation? Get the meat out, cut into rounds, quick bash with a mallet, about 15 seconds one side, on the BBQ, then the other.....unforgettable taste.

The look they give you. Just like a dog when you feed the cat first. [ I would never wipe with a cat, BTW.]

Only if cooked properly. overcook them, is like over cooking calamari. Balmain bugs are small, polluted and over rated. [ Apart from that, they are ok.]

I was getting that from this:

Cheap lobsters on offer for Christmas tables as prices plummet due to China import ban - ABC News

    As the guy says:

    "
"So if we're getting down to $30 we're just catching them for the fun of it. Even at $40 we're just catching it for the fun of it," he said."
