Sure. Let's just let the current crop of politicians choose, or even better, the current opinion on twitter. Here in Victoria we celebrate Grand Final Day, even when it doesn't happen here ( covid ), because a politician wanted to appease the trade union movement. Melbourne Show Day, or Cup Day, were fine for generations, but a politician cancelled those for his own gain. That what you want, Bob? Every National day, changed on the whim of a so called leader? How about Mao day? Stalin day?
Traditions are a part of every decent culture. Only weak, totalitarian, empty cultures seek to change them. It's called cancel culture nowadays, but Orwell wrote about it 70 years ago. The soviets rearranged history. The Chinese are doing it right now. Why do we need to follow those aresholes? Australia is a great country, or a least it was. People fought for it. You saluted the Flag yourself, in a cause you and I didn't believe in at the time, but you swore, so you did, because you swore. I still believe in the oath I took, even though I don't believe in the politicians. I didn't believe in them then either.
This current raft of cancel culture is despicable, but it won't last. it will be the socialists next, and I guess they will be welcomed by people with no grasp of history. If you don't believe me, take a look at the the good old USA, and Kamala Harris, the new POTUS. She is one piece of work.
Oh, one more thing; try getting on a plane overseas anytime soon. Virus?? Sure. Believe that and you'll believe anything.
Rant, sure, but I'll go away now.
'Sorry day' could also be a public holiday, you can reflect whilst enjoying your activities, as most people are just happy to score a day of and don't take in what the day actually reflects.
.
I say we should let the descendants of anyone who was here on the 26 January 1788 have a postal vote to determine if this is an appropriate date.
This includes First Nations and First Fleet descendants.
Then we need two holidays - a day for when we became one and free as Australia (not a British Penal Colony) and a day for when we recognise and celebrate our First Nations people.
Then almost everyone is happy!
