German has "Der" for masculine, which may or may not be appropriate, "Die" for feminine, which may or may not be popular, and "Das" for neutral.

But when gender is applied to higher living organisms, it is most certainly NOT a construct. It in fact a construct to suggest that it is. No amount of linguistic gymnastics can change chromosomes.

As I said, sex and gender are different things - sex is chromosomes and gender is cultural. Gender - which is what a society believes is for example the correct behaviour for a particular sex, i.e., masculinity and femininity - is not chromosomes.
