I remember her she used to make me expand as well.

The Mae Wests that were around when I did my coxwain course were more likely to kill one, rather than save one. They restricted movement except with the current.

Maybe they had enough cox's that year. Navy tended to be economical.... Unless you were of Flag rank of course.

I think their purpose was to knock you out when you entered the water so you didn't feel the shark bite.
