And reducing weight, and lowering tyre pressures will also help.

We came across a GU Patrol wagon on the road near Finke,a few years back.

The barbecue plate stored in the rear of the vehicle had gone through the metal floor of the vehicle and pierced the long range aftermarket fuel tank.

My son in the Deefer, did a huge desert trip about five years ago.His mate in a Patrol Ute broke both rear spring hangers and it was left in Julia Ck for repairs. Not an uncommon issue. They loaded all the gear and people into the now fully loaded Defender,(probably overloaded)and drove back across the desert,to Brisbane,no worries at all.
There was one issue,he drove into one of those big salt lakes late one afternoon, that’s where the vehicle stayed for the night
Unloaded it and dug it out the next day.

Driving sensibly, using common sense is what it’s all about.

Modern vehicles, are so comfortable and powerful,it’s often easy to be driving dangerously faster than one should,on bad roads, wrecking tyres and suspension, and increasing the risk of something happening.

Did anyone note the speed he was doing? 110KPH when things get nasty...

    It can,
Blown rear tyre, you hit the brakes, you loose control. Of course at speed, not at 20KPH.
    Been there done that.

I was told, after my first incident that if a rear tyre is blown, never hit the brakes, lift the right foot and roll to a stop, not quite like he rolled though.

I've had quite a few rear tyres go - mostly when on gravel roads and fully loaded. Never once felt like the car was going to do something stupid on me. Never had a front tyre go however

The rear axle on the 76 is also weaker than the 70 tray backs.

Still no excuse, anything will break if you try hard enough.

I had one rear tyre go, pulled-over to the left, applied the brakes VERY lightly and the car spun out.

Just amazing, how do people do this kinda thing and think it's what happens, the most important thing is preparation, then setting up the camper with the car, if you throw a camper on you've never had on your car, you don't do 100kph on dirt roads you don't know, that's just asking for trouble, just begs belief.

We did the Kimberley in 2017, we did Googs, Palm Valley, impact Creator, Great central road, old gunbarrel CSR to Georgia bore, Tallawanna Tr, Cape Leveque, the Gibb all the way plus Mitchel falls(now they are big corrugations) Bungles, Tanami to Wolf creek and back, Halls Creak to Top Springs to Mataranka, Katherine then Lichfield then Darwin, Kakadu, Katherine Gorge, back to Alice, Binns track to old Andaddo, Mt Dare, Dalhousie Oodnadatta to Copley, all with the camper on, I had two high speed punctures and never even looked like being out of control, well when I say high speed, 90kph on the good bits.

We did have have a spring hanger fail at the weld, but we had it patched at Halls Creek and we were off, then had it done properly in Darwin, an MAF sensor failed had a spare the had the car looked in Alice all good replaced the spare all good, 10 weeks, 23,000ks.

    Corrugations, what corrugations
    Cheers Baz.

A few people pointed that out in the comments.
Thing is, it's a Toyota, right? Unbreakable, right? 110, heavily laden, corrugations, it'll be fine, right?

I have never seen this before but funnily enough saw it again when a hoon tried to do burn out with an AMG in Sydney's South west then a turbo blew and the car burned.

They also posted some nice scenes of being barefoot around a fire.
All in all I was pretty amazed that nobody was seriously hurt.
The videos are almost a "what not to do in the bush"

Check out how they joined their winches together for the recovery and then connected the winch of the broken car to the tow bar of the other one to tow the vehicle away .... and used the winches for firewood collection.
