    Windscreen dazzle

Not experienced this before so thought would ask on here and see if someone has dealt with it before to save me experimenting to find the answer

When driving at night the lights of on coming traffic flares up In bright rings. The rings have a sort of rainbow colour scheme. The rings radiate out from the source not circles around the light.

They are dazzling and make seeing the road difficult. Not good on the narrow country roads around here

Noticed it is worse when raining and there seems to be something on the windscreen surface which I cannot see when dry

Have cleaned the windscreen a couple of times with both ‘standard’ cleaner from the trigger bottle and also car window glass cleaning paste. Neither seem to have made a difference

    Any suggestions?

I'm assuming the inside is clean as well?

You likely have silicone or some other contaminants on the glass.

In which case a solvent is needed. Acetone perhaps?

This is scattering of light giving the rings of light.

    There are several possible sources.

    1. Windscreen. Most likely is small scratches all over it, assuming it is clean. If this is the issue, the only real solution is to replace the windscreen.

    2. Scattering is much more prominent because your eyes are focussing on the windscreen not the road; either you need glasses or you need to get your prescription checked.

    3. The scattering is from cataracts in the lenses in your eyes; see an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

    Thanks for all the reply’s

Cataracts will be playing a part here. Have an operation on one eye later this month. Raised here as a passenger commented on it so not just me as I was thinking

The windscreen is about 12 months old. Have a copy of the receipt from the last owner. So far the surface has not become pitted and is a Pilkington brand so have some hope for quality of the glass

Have owned the car since November last year. Am thinking the last owner has used something on it or had been exposed to something that got stuck to the screen

Will try the suggestion about a cleaner and see if that makes a difference. If that does not work might have to replace the windscreen

The smearing that get's on the inside of the screen is caused by the movement of air in the car causing static electricity that draws chemicals out of the trim . If the previous owner used a silicone based cleaner on the dash that will get deposited on the screen in this process. I find I can not ride in cars that have had Armorall used in them , I am allergenic to silicon & it irritates my eyes.

I have found that keeping the inside of the screen is essential for safety during the day as well as night. Not only fumes from the materials used but if you're a smoker it's even worse. I had an incident many years back in the UK when I drove during late afternoon into the shade under a bridge and nearly smashed into a van parked there.
Totally invisible as the sun (yes the sun does shine sometimes in the UK) sort of flared across the screen making forward vision near impossible until I hit the shade. And very nearly hit the van as well.
This may be happening at night with the OPs screen.
I've got to have cataracts removed soon as well and rarely drive at night now but know the problem of trying to remove muck you can't actually see until it rains......
