Global Corporations - Anti reuse, re-purpose, recycle

Somewhere in our history consumers seemingly excepted products didn't last long, weren't repairable, parts became unavailable and consumables for devices became more expensive than replacing the complete device.

One of the common age old examples of this is at one point you could start buying a colour inkjet printer for under a $100. When the ink ran out a replacement ink cartridge was also about $100.
This one example is now to the extreme...

*Years ago I purchased a colour laser printer (a BROTHER branded one), cost $600.
*Years later and after printing faultlessly like 50 million pages the toners required replacing. Also note at a certain point if one of the toners is empty it wont let you continue to use the device even if you arent using that colour toner.
*I went to purchase more toners (4 in total).
*The toners are $150 each for a total of $600.
*I looked at a new colour laser printer, of course my model isnt made anymore.
*The equivalent model (with more functions) brand new was $300.
*As a consumer I am expected to throw out a perfectly functioning device as replacement consumables are double the price of a new device.

*This is a deliberate disgraceful act by a global corporation to maximise and continue their profit making with no care for the environment.
    Regards

There was a very good business journal article from the 1960’s titled ‘Marketing Myopia’ which asked the question ‘What business are you really in?’ These guys are not in the printer business, but the toner business. Unfortunately that’s their business model.
Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.

    I’ve used inkjettonerrefills.com.au for years.
Order refilled toner cartridges, send back the empties to be refilled.
    Cost effective for my business.

    recycled the recycling

Recycled my D3- replaced the 2005 with a 2009 when the rotten insurance company refused to fix it. Recycled the 2009 with replacement recycled engine

    - Decking just finished is recycled plastic. I recycled the recycling yesterday using the off cuts for my herb garden.

Its REPLAS from Ballarat. Ask me in ten years perhaps. Looking forward to Not oiling it every year while I consider the economics of that

Suspect I have redeemed my self of several tonnes of waste plastics Not a global corporation of course. A Local doing a great job in my thoughts.

Remember the power tools that began appearing maybe 20 years ago. It was cheaper to throw the circ away than it was to replace the blade. That stuff ****s me.

I put down recycled plastic decking around 7 years ago - just shy of 50 square meters of it - still looks as good as the day it went down. No twisting, no shrinking, no maintenance. Doesn’t stain and is easy to wash when needed. Global Corporations - Anti reuse, re-purpose, recycleGlobal Corporations - Anti reuse, re-purpose, recycle

I recently replaced the black toner in my HP colour laser. Quite an old model now(maybe 10 years or more), was one of the initial network capable printers back then that didn't cost both arms.
HP toner was not, and never will be an option at double the price of the printer!.
AND! .. printer was bought at Officeworks .. so not the cheapest source for one either.

Over $500 for the 4x HP cartridges, I think a bit over $140 for the black only. Printer cost about $250!

I used INK STATION online, but 2 black and the 3 colour (5 all up) cartridges .... delivered for less than $130.

But, totally agree with the OPs sentiment, that these manufacturers appear to have some kind of anti reuse mentality.
Also, I can never understand their pricing policy for replacement inks(toner or otherwise) .. why their pricing is so extreme which lets in the third parties come in so easily.

In my case, the 4 HP branded toners would have come in at nearly 5x the price of the compatible stuff I got.
Had the genuine HP toners been say $50 .. or even up too $100 more .. I would have preferred those instead.
But HP priced themselves so far off what would be considered a fair deal .. only reason HPs products came into the equation was to verify that their value for money was abysmal.

Now it rarely gets used coz kids have finished school completely .. so this new toner set will last me to my final days!

Ok,in another industry, recently we had a 10yr old, large evaporater coil in a freezer room with a faulty defrost heater. To replace the heater we have to drop the coil down as there is not enough room between the evaporater and the side of the freezer room, to slide the new heater in.
So if you are going to do that,as its quite a big job, replacing the three heaters in the coil would be a sensible idea. They are all the same age, etc.

Cost of three new heaters is more than a complete new(good quality) evaporater coil.New coil is off the shelf here in Brisbane, heaters are two days away from Melbourne.Freezer room needs to be going ASAP.

Heaters are a cheap item, I can get them made up, here, for less than $200 each, but the customer cant wait for 5 days for manufacturing.
The three genuine heaters are almost $2K,so just a rip off from the manufacturer.
If I can get the heaters made for less than $200 locally,i bet they order hundreds at a time from China for less than $50 each, as the same heaters fit a few different models they manufacture.

So even though the evaporater coil is in good condition,as are the fans, etc,its off to scrap, because it has one faulty defrost heater.

It's incredible what exactly goes into landfill!

Past couple of days I've been re deployed to haul 25 ton rubbish trailers. Not great work, but eye opening to say the least!

Pretty much new looking sink/small cabinet products, still in their boxes, wrapped in plastic, straight into the trailer, tipped off at the local landfill, pushed under by the dozer.
Quite annoying yesterday, hundreds of quite new looking Pope brand retractable garden hose reels, some still in boxes, but the front end loader isn't kind to this flotsam, so much of it just a loose tangled shambles of hose/reels and general crap. The loader tries to get it into the walking floor trailer, but much of it dangles off the sides, so has to be cut down before the tarp is closed. Hose is all new. once cut, the retracting reel thing zips itself back under it's own tension .. ie. sounds like they work fine.

Why just dump it all into landfill.

Seems as tho a warehouse has gone bankrupt or something and their stock had to be cleaned out .. so all into landfill.
Dunno .. everyone has a theory as to what its all about, but we can't touch any of it .. just has to get dumped.

This pile of Ryobi products, I noted circular saws, blowers, vacuums, high pressure washers ... all in pretty much brand new condition other than the brutality of being tipped off into the pile and then the front end loader pushing into a neater pile. This all goes to metal recycling area, but not all.

I noticed a couple of years ago the HP reports their performance to the stock market in terms of ink sales.
