any tips on shipping Landy into Autralia?

Hello, we are a French couple on a world tour, presently in the Emirates trying to organize the shipping of our vehicle to Australia, ideally to Fremantle.
Anyone done this before? Any tips regarding: planning customs clearance, preparing for quarantine inspection will be much appreciated.

To check a recent interview in English in the Emirati press:

    Shipping

Cannot help you with the customs etc as that changes often but a cheap way was to put it on the Perkins Barge from Singapore to Darwin. They run barges between Darwin and Singapore taking live cattle one way and generally coming back empty. Plus other cargo. They also visit Dilli. Sometimes there is a spare cabin if there are no stockmen travelling. Basic and it is a barge designed to run up and unload on the beaches as there are not wharfs at many of the settlements that it can also visit.
    Their email is perkins@perkins.com.au
As a shipping company they should be able to assist on customs.

A pm (private message) to "camel_landy" (Mark) might help as he brought his Defender out from the UK for a tour.

Although I am sure that Mark will pick up this and respond here.

BTW welcome from me and if there is an opportunity to catch up with you whilst you are here I will try: the AULROites are capable of meetings at short notice...so when you are near Sydney let us know.

Make sure it is spotlessly clean, AQIS will want to inspect it regardless but if its clean then you may get away without steamcleaning it. If it fails the inspection you are not allowed to drive it out of the freight depot (wharf) it will have to be collected on a tray truck. Google for DOTARS which is the Austarlian department responsible for import permits for vehicles and carnet's, also search the AQIS webiste for relevant information.
I work for a freight forwarder and currently studying for my customs brokers licence. Cheapest freight method would be as breakbulk or RORO cargo (roll on, roll off) ie not in a container - safest is in a container if the vehicle is full of gear.

Maybe also contact the editors at 4x4 Australia, as they sponsor the Outback Challenge - a huge competition event frequented by more and more foreign 4x4's every year. I'm sure that they'd know the best method of entry - or of those that do. Their number is +612 9263 9711 - and speak with Dean Mellor - the Editor. He may just be interested in doing an article on you while you're here.

Did I hear my name mentioned?

As Mahn said, I took my 110 into Oz from the UK for a 6mth tour before then heading on to NZ. If you drop me a PM, I'll be able to fill you in with all the detail that you'll need. The main points are:

    Get your visas organised.
Contact DOTARS to get permission before you ship.
Steam clean EVERYTHING inside & out... The truck and equipment has to be SPOTLESS!!!
    Ship it over....
Just before arrival, arange the customs and quarantine clearance.
Pay the various fees (be warned, it's expensive getting in & out of Oz).
Get the TAC (3rd party insurance) cover.
    Enjoy...

As I said, drop me a PM and I can go through things in detail with you if you want.

    HTH

    Mark.
