    Anchor H.M.A.S. Hobart

    Had some Tassie friends visit this week, and we toured the Fleurieu Peninsula .

    I had mentioned the Hobart was now a dive wreck off the coast, they were very interested so we stopped for the obligatory photo.

    The big plaque states “ ex HMAS Hobart....etc..”

    To me she is still Hobart, I realize mark II, but Shirley the ‘ex’ is not appropriate .

    we don’t refer to ‘Sydney’ as ex , so can Bob, or NavyDiver or OldFarang et al please explain

    She is no longer commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy, hence the ex-HMAS.

    She will always be " Hobart " to those that served in her. However she has been de-commissioned, and her name and battle honours passed on to the new "Hobart " . Her name lives on, so she will be remembered as Hobart 3 , the same as Sydney is remembered as Sydney 1,2,3 and 4.[ think I got that right.] Like most things naval in the RAN, it goes back to the days of sail, and the RN. When a ship was" Paid off " , it meant the Captain and crew were paid all outstanding wages & allowances, and the ship was" laid up" , ie put into what we call reserve . The Captain usually languished ashore on half pay , until his services were needed again, and the crew usually had a spree and wasted their money on grog & women, then looked for a berth in another ship. Of course there is more to it, but that's it in a nutshell.

    Yes, I understand she is no longer commissioned,but I just thought. ....she is still Hobart , and always will be , so why not say ‘ Hobart II ‘. .? not ex Hobart .

    I would think the ex only referred to the HMAS, rather than Hobart.
    Why was she scuttled off SA and not off Hobart / Tasmania?

    Gee Ian you ask hard questions,🤕
    perhaps Port Adelaide was her home base, perhaps she was fitted out there , perhaps the ratings( think Bob 10) ,were paid off there ,so by the time he had walked home to Qld he was sober.

    Anyhow, she is 11.1 kilometres due west of her anchor on a plinth.

    i remember diving aficionados suggest some ship be scuttled off the Derwent , but some environmentalist group put the Jakes on that.

    The ‘Lake Illawarra ‘ is still under the bridge but wouldn’t be much fun diving there .

    Can't be Hobart.
    Not while another commissioned ship bears the name.

    Hobart I; HMAS Hobart was a modified Leander-class light cruiser which served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) during World War II. Originally constructed for the Royal Navy as HMS Apollo, the ship entered service in 1936, and was sold to Australia two years later.

    Hobart II ;
    HMAS Hobart (II) | Royal Australian Navy

    Hobart III; HMAS Hobart (III) | Royal Australian Navy

    Hobarts final entry. It's impossible to describe the feeling of passing thru Sydney heads after an extended period away. Even now I feel emotional just watching this. My wife used to bring the Kids to North Head to see us come in. Home again!.

    Final Entry - YouTube

    Hobart II no 2 fire room.;

    Fully understand that Bob, Amazing Grace on bagpipes with an orchestra can do that, alone.
