In fact, I'd say the defender does it easier.

99% of the time I dont even use the CDL on sand, especially at Robe.

And my defender certainly is no light-weight 2.7t with no gear in the thing!

I can give you a couple of names of guys who said the same thing about Centre Diff Locks (CDL) , until the thing wore out way too prematurely.
The fact is that it works like buggery, but you don't even know it. One of them had a stage 1 at the same time as me, and he lived in S/W Vic and used to go to Robe a lot

Attached a pic of Vic sand BTW AND and that was with 7.50x16 ex army bar treads

    32 psi, December 28th 2003....

This bit was firm, next section had one vehicle bogged and required joining 16 snatch straps to reach him and drag him out

And yeah, I know about the CDL, but with TC you can tell when she's working hard. No problems at all in 110,000 kms (touch wood)

    But simplest advice:
    - Be patient
    - Momentum NOT speed is the key
    - Stay high if possible
    - Use old tracks if available
    - If getting stuck turn DOWN and accelerate gently... Gravity is your friend.
    - Start at 22psi and go down from there
    - Turn slowly
    - HAVE FUN.

Theres nothing in the world like scooting along a beach with the ocean just-over-there.

    Take your time,
be aware of what the tides doing,
make sure the guy in front gets thru before you attempt,

    its all good.

    Beach Driving for an Amateur

Thanks for all the replies. Seems like sensible information. Would anyone recommend any underbody treatment, or is it needed?? Don't mind applying some, as the chassis gets covered in mud regularly, and any protection would be beneficial for my "less than average" cleaning routine. Have to admit once my garage is built, I will be more apt to crawl underneath. As it currently it is parked on the street outside my house.

    Thanks,
    Ken
