Remember not that long ago when we were being told by the experts that no-one had ever successfully created a vaccine against a coronavirus? And therefore we were all doomed? That claim was false then, as there was in fact a vaccine for SARS, and as it turned out we were able to produce effective vaccines against Covid incredibly quickly.
Australia's border opening has been paused, until more information is passed on about the new variant. A prudent move , I think. Be alert, not alarmed, at this stage. The UK has halved the gap to getting a booster from 6 months to 3 months, while South African infectious disease experts say there is no indication Omicron is more dangerous than Delta. From TND;

It depends on what you mean by "there was a vaccine for SARS". Several vaccines had been developed, and trials planned. But traditional means of prevention (quarantine, masks, handwashing, lockdowns etc) meant that by the time the vaccines were ready, and trials were planned, there was no demand for vaccines and critically, no cases. How do you test a vaccine when the disease had disappeared? Research again started to ramp up for the closely related MERS outbreak, but interest waned when no human to human transmission was found.
But the work done to develop these vaccines was of direct and immediate use in developing vaccines for the very similar SARS-COV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. And vaccines for this were ready for testing by the beginning of Mach 2020. The time from then to when the first vaccines appeared on the market was the time taken for trials, assessment of the data from the trials, and approval, and time to plan and implement large scale production - mRNA vaccines in particular had never been made on a large scale previously.
Nice professor from NSW suggesting 2-3 months for 3rd dose which "dramatically" increases immune response and a fascinating chat by Astrazeneca about superiority for AZ with T cell V antibodies (not proven but interesting)
The US booster studies reviewed in Corona cast as well were interesting.
On the negative side the low significant impacts in South Africa just might be attributed the generally younger ages of the infected there
Avg age is South Africa is 27 ish years old. US is 38ish we are 37ish. That will be watched carefully in EU. UK and other places the new variant is moving about now.
Had to chuckle about the 10 plus cases from the protestors her in Melbourne. One of whom infected 10 more people[bighmmm] I wonder of they join the counter protests when they recover? Perhaps the Protests should be called a Covid Party?
Question. how many of these sick unvaccinated protesters have refused medical treatment in preference that the own immune system to fight it. Have refused medication to treat it as they don't put poison into themselves.
Exactly. It would be interesting to come back in say 50 years hence & see if this business has been a really, really right old cock up or whether it has been a marvelous success. Always assuming that there is anyone alive that could tell us, that is.
I'd better ask my selected Funeral Director to put that in my 2071 Diary so he/she can arrange a call.
