And here is the German take on the current wave,

EDIT watch the video, Lauterbech warns of massive 5th wave. What on earth makes our mob think they know more than the Europeans. We are in the situation where we can watch what's happening elsewhere, and adjust accordingly. I hope hubris and arrogance hasn't condemned us to a situation that should just not have happened.

IF this starts going crazy again in VIC and NSW I hope that McGowan revises his Febuary opening date, I can't get my booster shot until March along with thousands of other West Australians.
It would be absolute lunacy to open up the State IF there are still thousands of new cases each day in the Eastern States.

Briefly, one of the boys Mothers had been trying to get back into Tassie for ages, she hadn't seen him for about a year due to all the precautionary measures.

She eventually did & had him for 5 days until he was one of the lads that was killed in the Jumping/Bouncy Castle "accident". That is heart-string stuff, A. I believe another victim has died today.

Worst case is this will go crazy all up the Eastern seaboard. The only positive I can see is that yesterday over 66,000 Qlders were vaccinated. Some anti-vaxxers have had a conversion on the road to Damascus. I was accused by one member of living in misery, because I believe in telling it as it is. The misery may just be beginning.

****ing Hell Bob it is your misery so you can live in it any way you like. Keep on telling it as it is as the news is all kept together. You don't seem to report crap.
Did that person sign them selves, Ima Denier? Seems to like a bit of sand to bury their heads in.

[QUOTE=bob10;3125596]Of course it does. But going on the European experience, Omicron is going to infect many more than delta, and a percentage of those are going to hospital and a percentage of them are going to the ICU. It doesn't take an Einstein to work out without basic restrictions , such as masks, those percentages are going to be high. And health workers are not robots. exhaust your health workers,[ and indeed some of them will be infected] and you are in deep ****. [QUOTE]Sorry but my opinion is NSW has dropped the ball again. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

Almost everyone I know in the health sector is stuffed. Need more of them to run marathons not just work them

Spare a thought for what is about to be the biggest issue in 50 days when Several thousand people from all over the world fly into china for the winter Olympics "Beijing will host the Winter Olympics in less than 50 days, when tens of thousands of foreigners will be allowed to enter the country.Reports recently show that Chinese shots given to the vast majority of its highly vaccinated population do not provide sufficient antibodies against Omicron.
China must maintain strict control measures at ports and borders ahead of the Olympic events, Dr Liang Wannian, an epidemiologist who leads China's special task force on the pandemic response, said at a press conference on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a local outbreak of non-Omicron coronavirus infections continues to grow.
China reported 44 locally transmitted cases on Sunday in Zhejiang, Shaanxi and Guangdong. Four other asymptomatic infections were reported, including one in the financial hub of Shanghai, according to the National Health Commission"

My prediction is not pretty for China. IF we get boosters as quickly as I hope noting we have lost almost a months opportunity. The few hundred I have been able to run out November and last week has just one vial 6 doses in my fridges. Omicron is a little less likely to kill quiet as many as Delta or its predecessors. Your right Des, Our hospitals are justifiably nervous right now. A few less than a whole lots is hardly a picnic.

The people demanding a 6 month Vax exemption after having Covid despite being able to be safely vaccinated are possibly in the frontline fight fight with the new Big O (or Greek little 'o')

Unfortunately the evidence is that Omicron causes more break-through infections than Delta - something like 50% - so people will get infected. They may not get sick, but they will get infected.

The problem with the new variant is the number of people who need a couple of days off when they have it. These are not some sub set of society but come from everywhere in society. That means the medical professions are also impacted and do this time round while the ICU is not overloaded the people who look after you in the hospital are not there as they are at home sick.

The UK system depends on a large number of people who are temp/casual not permanent staff. They are making themselves unavailable for work. Can understand this as if full time and sick you are paid if temp/casual no support. So they are being very choosy in where and when will work. This means wards are not able to open adding to the reduction in staff due to permanent people who are off sick

So while the ICU and death numbers are small in comparison the pressure on the hospital system is different this time
