Replacement Radio and speakers?

Grizzly I haven't seen the factory placement of the speakers but if you want 6" drivers instead of 4" make up a spacer out of MDF to fit them in

iPod!

1. 40GB or 60GB iPod ($450 or $600) If you know anybody who is a student or teacher, get them to purchase with Apple's education discount and it is a LOT cheaper.
2. iPod compatible stereo eg. Kenwood KDC-MP40296 (some on sale now for around $180)
3. iPod adapter eg. Kenwood KCA-iP500 around $80

Wire the adapter through to your cubby box - the iPod can sit in there nice and safe and will charge from the car as well as let you browse your library on the screen of the head unit.

THEN load ALL your CDs onto the iPod through your computer. And I mean ALL of them. You will be amazed how some of those old tunes you might have forgotten about get a new lease on life when you hear them in full digital quality in the car. Stick the system on random and let her rip. I guarantee you will crank it up and not even know the engine is running. Doesn't really matter if your speakers are not the best - Defenders have pretty dodgy interior acoustics anyway. But don't under estimate the fun of hearing your entire music collection in random order.

I did this to mine this is great over long distances. Makes trips around town fun too, just have to avoid spending the entire journey working what I want to listen to.

well i just recently changed my stero but in my disco

i have a sony xplod mp3 in gun metal grey and i changed my factory fit speakers to rockford fosgate coaxils front and back and hoping very soon to fit a rockford fosgate sub all though will be from the cheaper punch series as i can't afford to pay 300 dollars for a sub at the moment....


brought my speakers of a guy in penrith nice bloke they were new and they were considerably cheaper than from the shops and they sound great!!! he imports from the usa and has a supplier over there....

an ipod can plug into an amplifier through the RCA inputs (no need for an expensive head unit) I think the standard c.d player on the disco has RCA inputs for the cd stacker if you haven't a stacker it could plug into this then operate through the cdc button on the stereo

Dullbird if your getting subs make sure you run them of a monoblock amplifier (better sound quality) and make sure all wiring in the engine bay is sealed, a circuit breaker on the power wire is a good idea so it doesn't short when deep fording. Get a caravan type plug on the sub box so you can remove the box quickly in case you need the storage in the boot

I thought the same until I tried the full setup. You can't beat having the program display right on the dash - it beats fiddling about with the iPod on a lead or in a cradle somewhere. The iPod also charges from the proper connection which makes camping easy as you never have to worry about plugging in anywhere else to charge up (especially if you have videos on it which use a lot of juice). Besides, iPod compatible head units are not that expensive (see my previous post). I also particularly like having the iPod tucked away in the cubby out of harms way and prying eyes.

You just reminded me to look for a front aux imput for my pda :) when i replace the disco stereo with an mp3 cd player.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. Judging from the feedback I would say for me to hold off and go speak to a professional about it first to see what their recommendations are.

I have a few requirements such as a clock, full iPod control, rear speakers.. dunno about boombox / tweakers / amplifier but I'll see what the professionals suggest.

another speaker option is jaycar response.....
these speakers were compared to the more expensive name brands and held their place
and even beat some of the other brands........
i have been using jaycar speakers in my installations for the last 10 years....
they are cheaper because you dont pay for the name.......but the quality is there.....
they handle a fair amount of power and also take some abuse.......

these are champain quality on a beer budget......
just that not too many people know how good they are.......



and i will fit them to lurch one day........hmmm....a 4wd doof doof machine....
