Thread: Replacement Radio and speakers?

I've replaced mine with a pioneer job DEH-P3350 ? (a few years ago now) also replaced the speakers with some pioneer jobs fitted straight into the fronts, the rears are high on the sides in the rear, but not happy with the position and looking to move possibly onto the cargo barrier.

most radios are now a standard DIN size.

I have just re-newed my stereo in the Rangie - Sony 450GTS? or something.

I wanted this unit as it plays MP3's from disc but also has a front AUX connection so I could connect my PDA - which has SatNav and can control the volume from either and I can play MP3s when off road without the disc skipping.

This bloody stereo even came with a remote control and all the connectors for the AUX - not bad for $250 from JB hifi.

the biggest problem is where to fit the subwoofer and boombox.....



what are you planning to fit exactly....?
if you are planning to use an amplifier.....try and find a head unit with rca outputs.....
you dont need high power for this......


if you are gonna run the speakers straight off the head unit.....then get one with as high a power output
as your credit card will allow.....
and try and match the wattage of the speakers to the power of the head unit.....
eg....if your deck puts out 25W per channel.....its no use getting 150W speakers....
it will sound crap.....you need to have 20W speakers for that sort of power.....

just be carefull when comparing units.

these days the duff duff boys just go for the biggest number on the box and dont understand their ratings. As long as you are comparing like with like.

the main thing is most are rated at max or PMPO watts - this is how you get 2000W stereos, whereas most good guys will compare/rate using RMS.

not an expert here, but RMS is what most home stereos are rated also - say 2 x 50RMS where car stereos will advertise 4 x 80watts when in fact they are more like 4 x 10RMS.

I used to run 4 x 55 RMS amps at 4 ohms and these kick some good tunes - 2 channels were bridged and were 2 ohm stable for a sub so effectively getting about 200 RMS into a sub!!!

My Defender will be running 6" in the doors (door build) 4" in the dash and tweeters on the dash then 6 x 9" in the rear panel and 12" sub in a box in the tray. Not worked out which speakers but prob Infinity / JBL / Alpine.

If you are looking for quality sounds then you need to plan ahead and do the little things properly - sound deadening stips in doors and panel where needed and when you get your speaker buy the best speaker wire you can afford, ditch the ones supplied unless buying good equipement.

This was an old hobby of mine, but still have lots of stuff left over.

Let me know if you can't see.... the guy I bought the fender from spent about 4.5K a few years back.

* golf-ball-size tweaters are fitted to the dashboard using same screw fixings as the air vent

* amplifier is fitted more-or-less-out-of-sight to the back of the rear cargo drawer

* rear speakers are fitted up high also-more-or-less-out-of-sight above the rear-side windows

* sub-woofer boom boxes are covered in same material rear floor is covered in. They aren't out of sight but need double-take to know what they are....

* head unit is a 6 stacker


Sound from this setup is friggin awesome


I've broked down a couple of times and have had to leave the car overnight in some dodgy areas.... so far so good, touch wood.

Grizzly there a bit expensive for a pioneer setup especially on the postage. Go down to JB hifi or Strathfield car radio and get a set

I had a pioneer system years ago in a small sedan. The head unit was good but the speakers had very little bass to them. Clarity was excellent but just sounded crappy without the depth. I replaced the pioneer drivers with Boston Acoustics and found they were excellent. I just swapped the Boston Acoustic 6 x 9 speakers the other week for a 15"subwoofer for the disco. I haven't got it in yet to many other projects at the moment to justify more amplifiers going into cars

I bought one of these Sony units:



1) It has (bottom RHS) an "Aux-in" socket to take feed from an external device....like my iPod. Very noice!

2) It has a volume KNOB rather than silly little up/down volume push buttons which I hate.

3) It only cost me $180 new from Strathfield, which is a bargain.

4) It is nice and plain-looking. Like my Land Rover - "function over form". I really detest all the "funky" flash-looking crap out there with blinking lights and stuff all over them.
