Doctors are like mechanics I reckon, there are some very good ones and some that do the bare minimum. And sometimes knowing enough to call BS is also an advantage.
Not Doctors but we took our small white dog to the vet yesterday as he has been losing weight and we figured he's winding down so we're looking to make his old age comfortable without stressing him out too much. Diagnosis came back as kidney disease after $350.00 worth of blood tests but the kicker was that the vet reckoned he was dehydrated and the tests would be better taken after a night in the surgery on a drip.
So would the result be likely to be different after a night on a drip? "probably not"
You can see how much he is shaking just being here how do you reckon he'll go overnight with a drip inserted? "oh we'll just sedate him"
And how much would this cost to get the same outcome? "at least $500.00"
So what would you do when you get these additional test results? "recommend a kidney friendly diet"
And you cant do this anyway? "we can sell you some very expensive dogfood", "Oh it looks like we have to order it in, there's none in stock"
Oh well, just give me the bill......
Came home and googled the correct diet, he's 90% there, we just needed to cut out the commercial treats and found out that adding eggs and omega 3 oils was a good thing.
Not particularly satisfied with our experience with that particular vet, although others at the surgery have been great over many years.
