Lightbulb Hey Inc got an idea for a sub forum

Suggestion a sub forum to technical
a forum or library if you must on DIY Short cuts
    eg: Diff pinion replacement
    Clutch replacement etc

have the usual disclaimers etc but simple things like using a milk carton to catch the oil filter is a good short cut we can all use in a reference type library there must be 100's of short cuts in our collective minds on this forum lets pool them.

just an Idea whilst I was searching the net for diff pinion replacement.
If it costs more to do so let me know and I will re donate.
or if you think its a crap Idea PM me and I will shut up.
If you guys support the idea post on this thread.

A library or Bible as a sticky at the top of the Forum, with a "if you have a tech question, look here first" with actual threads + links to threads as people ask the same thing week after week, eg wading plug size/thread, recommended gearbox oil, etc. There is a wealth of info in the forum, if people would look.
The forums have a great search facility, but no one bothers to use it !

The downside is someone will have to put it together.....

I think this is what "Common Threads" was for,,

bloody difficult to do,, and upkeep,,
how many different things go wrong with Landies????

I keep thinking a couple of chronic topics like D2 CDL's
    or
    overheating/temp sensors for Deisels,

    but where do you stop?

The common threads section in the old place had quite a collection of information. The list of contents and links are currently in the archive section accessible by the link at the bottom right of this page.

Unfortunately as the old server died we are not able to access the accumulated knowledge.

Whilst Vlad and latterly I were reasonably active in creating links to threads of a common nature and also steered people in that direction, inevitably if people don't use the search function then the same questions will continue to be asked and the quantity of separate threads relating to common topics increases and becomes unmanageable.

I guess that all forum members need to be disciplined using "search" and considering if they should post a new topic or reply/add to an earlier topic.

I'm happy to keep the common threads going and would welcome members prompting if they consider that threads warrant a link in common threads.

(BTW I read every tech thread that is posted)

    PS:

As DirtyDawg suggests maybe it would be better placed a sub forum under technical if this is possible or a sticky in the Tech Section entitled "start here" with a link to the common threads section. Administration is still required to gather and assemble the links. Posting would still take place in the technical section.

    Any member views?

it sort of really needs people that have an interest in "each" model,,

yes,, thats a LOT of people,,,

BUT it has the ability(need better word) to be a unique reference.

    also a VERY large reference

Sounds like an idea, but if it is to hard to create a section on the forum and then make sure it is kept orderly. I have started something similar on LandRoverAce with a page containing links to step by step instructions on how to carry out certain jobs or make changes to things to save money. It would be simple to add something like a "tips and techniques" page like you say. Matt
