small fun car with manual gearbox

well we have had the twin cab ute thread .... How about a small fun reasonably priced car thread. Boss womens cars getting long in the tooth .... and a small run-about would probably be ideal (with one kid able to get there 'P' plates later this year and another able to get "L"s at about the same time).... Anyway, I was having a quick look around ... and what jumped out at me was the Citroen DS3 .... 1.6litre turbo charged car with 6spd manual gearbox. you could get one with low kms from the last decade for around $12,000 ......... They aren't as fast as a lot of the hot hatches ... but still as fast as a lot of supercars from the 70s' .......

then I found out about the issues with that 1.6litre motor .... .urggghhhhh..... Well that rules out the mini as well then .... and the poogoes with that 1.6 litre turbo petrol.

She'd like a Mustang ... but those thing have gone up in value rather than down by the looks of it over the last two years. What are other peoples thoughts on a small fun car ?

I know a PT Cruiser in Melbourne if you like. not advertised yet but its about to outlive its usefulness.

I moved mine on to a grand daughter because she wanted to learn manual . Love them or hate them Its a really good strong fun car, but AC stopped working, I fixed the usual issues of faulty water pump , timing belt that scare most mechanics , and put on a reco head and new clutch.

How far back do you want to go?

Honda Prelude, even with 300 thou country miles. GoKart on roids.

The one with the pop up lights, silver, noice. Hits 180 without you even noticing.

Or a GTI Golf or the latest Ford equivalent.

Porsche 928............. was offered one of those, black, manual for 5k once, .....shoulda .

Mum has a 2005 Golf V bog standard 1.9 tdi with a 6 speed box. I certainly rate it and it can be fun to drive if you give it a bit of stick.

Bargain, but probably not P/L plate friendly if it's good for 40,694 mph.

What about a modern mini? Plenty in the range with go faster options and even a convertible. They have been around for longer than you think and there are bargains to be had in the earlier ones

Check that you fit though if looking at the first generation were a bit tight in the drivers seat space with my knees finding it a challenge to enter and exit. There was more room in the original mini but that is progress

If you don't need more than two seats an MX5 would be my pick. Early ones have jumped up in price.

Pre Covid I picked up a 2009 Polo 1.9 TDI for Helen, only had 46,000 on the clock. This thing is a hoot to drive, handling is OK but the amount of torque in such a small car is great. Really good economy out of the thing at about 5 litres per 100. We bought it to teach the boys to drive manual and as a cheap commuter.
