    North Wales

    Hello All,

I have been asked a question about attitudes in Wales about people who live in North Wales. My ancestry is from North Wales by the way. Would I be right in thinking that there is a North/South divide and folk in the South consider themselves to be more urbane than Northerners?

A couple of years ago I sat next to a Welsh lady on a plane to Melbourne and I was asked about where my relatives came from. When I answered the comment was made by the lady that she was from Cardiff and that my mob were from 'up North', and that she had never been there. My brother was just asked the North/South question and I could only pass on the less urbane - country cousins Southern image of those from the North. Is this right and what other types of things are associated with being Northern Welsh?

According to genetic research carried out by Professor Donnelly (2012) from Oxford University, "People from Wales are genetically relatively distinct, they look different genetically from much of the rest of mainland Britain, and actually people in north Wales look relatively distinct from people in south Wales." This was attributed to North Wales being located further away from the influences of Anglo-Saxon settlement that occurred in South Wales after the Romans left (accessed March 2, 2022 from, Welsh people could be most ancient in UK, DNA suggests - BBC News).

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Based only on interactions with people while working in the southern part of Wales near Cardiff and Newport there is a divide like you allude to. Then there is also the divide between those who live on the south coast and those who live a couple of miles further north in the ‘valleys’

Yeah from what I can recall from holidays in North Wales as a kid, there's a north/south divide.
I remember 2 old ladies, one from north, the other from the south, who had to talk to each other in English, because neither could understand the other's Welsh!
