Any University of New South Wales Industrial Arts Trained Teachers here?

    Hello All,

Yes, this post does fit into the General Chat guidelines.... "Almost anything goes, have a look and drop in a few lines. Think of it as a campfire chat with the kids around".

I also know it is a long shot - just wondering if there are any former/current New South Wales Industrial Arts teachers who trained at the University of New South Wales during the 1970s? According to the UNSW's Professional Handbooks of 1977 and 1978 there were the following three units available to study: Ethnotechnology I, Ethnotechnology II and Ethnotechnology III. The units were designed by Professor Leslie Martin Haynes.

I have contacted the current Dean of the most likely department at UNSW; their library and their Alumni about Ethnotechnology and Professor Haynes' research. So far I have drawn a blank.

There are contributions of Professor Haynes at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and the Smithsonian Institute in the USA collections of artefacts. Yes - I have contacted them too.

Well I did write that this is a long shot! You never find out if you don't ask.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

University of NSW or University of Sydney?

I didn't know UNSW ever did IA teaching, however Sydney Uni was probably the biggest University supplying in that area.

If UNSW did do IA teaching, it hasn't been since before the 90's, I suspect you'd be lucky to find anyone still there when it was around!
    Cheers

    Hello Slunnie,

    Thank you for the reply.

No. it was definitely University of New South Wales - the specialist training in Industrial Arts for Industrial Arts teaching wrapped up when Professor Haynes retired in 1978. The description of the course and the units are in the University of New South Wales 1977 and 1978 Professional Handbook which I downloaded copies of. Please see http://legacy.handbook.unsw.edu.au/a...ndbook1977.pdf go to page 139 for the unit outlines. That is PDF page number out of 182. The actual page of hard copy of the Handbook is page 131.

The highly likely situation that no former staff members are still at UNSW is why I posted on the UNSW Alumni. Even those ex-students would be at retirement age or just beyond it. You never know your luck in the big city though Slunnie.

    Kind regards
    Lionel
