    Daughter's encounter in carpark...

My daughter sent this message this morning.

Was in tesco car park sitting in the 90 and a man came over and pointed for me to open my window and he asked me what I had under the bonnet
When I said 300tdi he said oh so a heap of ***** and I was like EXCUSE ME
And then he said he ran his defender on a 280 something which I didn't really understand because that's not a Defender engine? So I just said haha cool must go here

Do not know but she also said this....

    In his 50s I'd say
I just told him it does me perfect for farming and towing.

Anyway she loves her 90, 300 tdi and all.

Decided on a tdi for her as it is simple and basic. She grew up with our Land Rovers so she knew what to expect! Our own 200tdi hit 30 years of age this year. As she lives away from home I wanted something that could be easily repaired if it went wrong.
She ran out of fuel owing to a worn out sender unit, since changed. The 90 was simply fuelled up, bled using the hand priming pump and fired first time. When the master light switch went it was quickly and inexpensively replaced. You cannot beat that.
The 90 gets her to college, to work, and she helps out on the farm where her partner works. She shifts bales and horsey stuff in it as she has a pony which she tows around in her horse box with the 90. She loves it.

He may have been referring to the HSE 2.8 which was a development of the 300Tdi by International in Brazil (I think). Landrover sold the 300Tdi to International late 1990s I suspect and also sold them the development rights. International continued to supply Landrover with parts while they did a complete redevelopment of the motor, making 300 or so changes including incorporating a Garrett variable vane turbo.
Quite a few of these motors were exported to Landrover countries, including Australia. I fitted one to a Range Rover LSE which was an interesting exercise. They were also fitted to Ford Transit vans, apparently.

Could also be from South Africa as they fitted a 2.8 BMW straight six (I6) for that market. In South America the Defender copies made in Spain by Santana had 2.8 engine which which I think was an Iveco.

    Update.
Not the carpark but a pub this time. My daughter had driven her and a friend to a nearby pub in the 90 (she was not drinking). A man came in and asked her if that was her 90 parked outside. She said it was. He told her he had parked his New Defender 90 beside her 300 tdi. He said he used to have a td5 90 which he loved. Unfortunately his wife didn't like driving it so it went, to be replaced with a New Defender 90. He loves it and his wife does too.
He said he got a phone call from Land Rover offering to buy his New Defender for £9,500 more than he paid for it. They said if he sold it to them they would put him on a list for a new one...in 18 months time! He declined the offer.
Below is a little video which she sent. I do not know if it will work but if it does listen to what she says about the two 90's parked side by side.

    Defender 90

Spudfan, you had great taste and foresight getting that vehicle for your daughter.

I hope she enjoys it as much as I do mine (td5).

Pretty close clone I reckon, see photo.
