Thread: VIC/SA Border Track - How close to the border can u drive?

There are heaps of trip reports on this site about this journey (which I haven't done entirely yet).

Do a search, and be particularly aware that it is closed for a large part of the year due to fire risk....... which will be your major constraint.

Did a cool drive though the parks and up to Ikara ranges and beyond. It was very dry at that time. Loved it!

What I would recommend:
For a bit of variety around the area, I'd suggest to use the eastern side of the Murray-Sunset NP, through Rocket Lake, Mopoke Hut and down to Lake Crosbie(Pink Lakes) area.
Very nice/interesting spots to see, walk around and camp at any of them.

Then from there, you head west towards (use main hwy or use the sand tracks) and you can travel the border track into the Wyperfield-Big Desert/Ngarkat parks.

just a suggestion.

Then again the suggestions could end up being endless when talking of variety .. Hattah-Kulkyne area south east of Mildura is also a nice place, rivers/lakes/tracks/camping abound ... so where does one stop suggesting alternatives!

I haven't been out that way very much for a while(just a couple of short day trips) ... and my longer multi day travels in the area were 20-30 years ago(border track). Much may have changed in the way of popularity(close to zero 30 years ago!).

I do know that one trip with the bro to Pink Lakes/Mopoke the camp ground at Lk Crosbie was quite busy, but no one at Mopoke.

I did the Border track many years ago, I remember that it's in theory 'one-way'.
