I can highly recommend OziExplorer on an Android device. Maps here:

Follow the links to Hema. They are official versions - Ozi Explorer has been around for many years.

Always nice to have hard copies, so for sure the link you posted looks like something worth having.

Digital maps depends on what device you have.
Like Simon recommended, Ozi (on an android device .. where larger = better) is nice to use. I can recommend a 10" Lenovo tablet if mainly for digital map use too.

If you have a PC too, it's easy to configure Ozi Android to your preference.

If you have an Apple environment, I dunno what software to use tho.

Hemas' 150K map for Ozi is nice to use for traveling the entire country, but lacks track details if you want to explore some areas ... so you also need more detailed maps.
Many are free for Ozi with really good 50 or 25K level detail(perfect for driving).

If you are in the  ecosystem then ExplorOz is a great option. EOTopo maps are downloaded so mobile coverage is not necessary for use. Maps are available for desktop use and route planning is possible there and transferrable to iPhone/iPad wirelessly.

I am in the apple ecosystem as it happens Not sure what I will be using yet, I have two older ipads, one with cellular which I have been using for my past trips. They both have limited internal memory so I am not sure how many maps would fit on there. I am also considering using my phone since it is much newer with much more storage space and it simply has a smaller display which is something worth thinking about since an ipad in the middle of my view is getting a bit tiresome though I do like the large overview.

Indeed I do prefer to have a large paper map as well, I will be ordering one to start pouring over to do some serious planning since my visit (if oz will have me -g-) is creeping closer. I gotta fly now to do some work but I will be looking into the suggestions soon!

PS anyone with an ipad/iphone know how much space the offline maps use?

Not too bad, really.

I use the IOS system with the following Apps:

• Mapout
• PocketEarth
• OSMAndMaps
• HEMA 4WD Map App (recent purchase so still learning)

I do all my pretrip planning on Garmin BaseCamp where I create POI's and tracklogs of where I'm planning on going. I then transfer this info into the various Apps listed above as each App has some benefits. I recently purchased the HEMA 4WD Map App mainly just for the maps, so it's a bit too early to say whether the any will suit my needs. Some of the maps are good and some not so good.

Because you use iOS, then any reference to OziExplorer should be ignored.(sorry).

But I also have and use OSMAnd too.
It's quite ok, primarily because it's free and you load whatever maps you need for a region.

I don't use it much tho, I'm 99.9% an Ozi user.
