The report I read suggested driver fatigue. Stopped at a servo at ~1am and was visibly exhausted with the intent to drive another couple of hours.
    A tragedy all round.

Agree, another unfortunate tragedy that probably could have been avoided.
And an old vehicle, unfortunately,no where near as safe as something modern.

    I'm conflicted about that statement.

A more modern and arguably "safer" car may have seen the front seat occupants survive. An extra hours sleep may have avoided it entirely. Relying on "technology" (whether that be in design or operation) to overcome poor judgement tends to result in the judgement getting worse because "the technology will take care of it".

I would never think that way ever, particularly in this type of incident,or situation, although some may.

    Fellow Land Rover Owner Tragedy

I wouldn’t take the click-bait report of a servo worker at 1am nor the speculations of a family member as gospel either.

That same servo worker described a 200km journey as “a long trip”.

It’s sub 2 hours on a decent road.

Plenty of people fresh from 7-8 hours of sleep look tired. I see it every day.

Unless there’s dash cam recordings it’s unlikely to be known what the true cause was:
    - inattention
    - animal avoidance
    - fatigue
    - distraction

The only one they can potentially prove would be mechanical failure

Anyway, what the girl did for her siblings was very good of her, I hope they have people to care for them.

Isn't it a little early for the speculation?

And rather pointless, John. It's not going to bring those poor young kids' mum and dad back.
Life can be such a bitch, sometimes.

Old car, new car it sucks not matter which way you look at the end result. To bad about the disco but devastating for the 5yo. The 1yo kid can probably get over it? But that 5yo girl is a hero in my book. I feel for them.
