Funnily Enough.
Lanterns replace toilet rolls in emergency night retrievals for the Royal Flying Doctor Service - ABC News
Many moons ago, late 1980's, in Karumba we no airstrip lights.
When we had lost aircraft or RFDS coming in after dark we used Hurrican Lamps along the strip, 2 cars at the "Stop before you get here!" end & 1 car at the other end. Swapped the cars for take-off.
Worked well, all the lamps in the back of a Ute, 1 person lighting them & another putting them on the ground at suitable spacings while the Ute drove along at a very slow pace.
The pilots reckoned it was pretty good.
Before that we had used sand & diesel filled big beetroot tins, crap system, you would burn yourself, they were smoky, hard to light, affected by wind & the pilots said the were hard to see.
