    Buying another 4wd- Vic Registrations

What is my best option here?
After 8-10 months, I've found exactly the vehicle I need.
I need to go to an auto Disco due to ongoing knee/ ankle issues.
So the plan is to buy it now & put into cold storage until I sell off the other 4x4's, (this is a 24-30 month plan BTW.)
    THE QUESTION.
Its currently registered, & with RWC
Is it better to transfer the rego & pay stamp duty now & then not register at renewal
    Or
Should I let the rego run out & register it in 2-3 years time.
Or is it 50/50 either way.

Personally I’d keep it registered. You will need another rwc once rego runs out and if something happens in the meantime to one of the other vehicles you have one ready to go instantly.

My understanding is if you transfer the rego using the current RWC, pay the stamp duty, and then let the registration lapse, you'll only have 28 days to re-register before you'll need another RWC.

The assessment has to take into account the costs of obtaining a RWC (inc the hassle) and the risk of the inspection post storage throwing up additional repair work, against the saving of less registration fees.

I suspect you're better off to utilise the current RWC and cop the rego charges for the next couple of years - might also increase your motivation to move on the other vehicles.

Same. $800 a year is a small price to pay, and you have no idea if VicRoads will get tougher in the future. I suspect that they will.

would you rather give $2400 to the government to keep it registered, or spend $2400 on the car to get it up to scratch to re-register when you need it?

The $2400 to the government is a fixed known cost at least. Roll the dice - could be a few hundred or many thousands later on - RWC's are getting harder all the time with Vicroads tightening the screws every 6 months or so on the requirements. Who knows what may be needed or what extras they will check in a few years. Personally for a Land Rover I'd pay to keep it registered - and then it could be driven every few months to keep things moving as well - I wouldn't expect to park a Disco up for 3 years then be able to start and drive it again without opening my wallet.

My above comment was based on my own experience, I'm talking 30+ years ago when I had my first RRC, I was washing it one day and noticed the rego sticker (remember them?) was 13 months out of date. I had never received the renewal notice and had been driving without reg for that time. Vicroads offered me the option of either back-paying the rego or getting a RWC and re-registering it. Took me about 5 seconds to make the decision based on the above question to myself (although it was about $400 at the time). New windscreen, couple of other small items, new rego, happy days. Getting a car up to RW standard for yourself beats driving it with all manner of problems and then getting it all fixed for the next owner when selling time comes, as I have so often done.

You haven't specified what year the Disco is too.
If it's older than 25 years, you could go with part time club reg, and keep it on road and use it occasionally to keep it oiled up.
Then once you offload the daily or whatever, revert it back to full reg.

IIRC club reg is in the mid to high 100's ... depending on how many days you pay for.

If it's younger than 25 years (ie. 1998 or newer) ... then disregard my reply.
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

You were bloody lucky with that RRC. They don't do that any more, 3 months and that's that, it's unregistered. And these days the consequences of driving unregistered do not bear thinking about. VicPol isn't known for their sense of humour, and the case goes straight to court. 25 demerit points for a first offence and a very hefty fine to boot, and they don't listen to protestations of innocence through ignorance, especially the Highway Patrol. 30 years ago you even got a month's grace to pay. Definitely not anymore.

None of the above helps the OP though. I'm with GAV, You're not. OP can choose.
