big sheds always seem to fill

Last month I moved house from a fairly large property to a small bungalow in preparation for my world trip. I had a total of around 500m2 of storage space and I went to 52m2 of storage that I have rented for a 5 year period to store some gear I did want to let go. Yes, that's basically a tenth

This means the other 9/10 had to be: sold, scrapped, given away, etc. I have even moved some stuff to a local museum. It is surprising how I managed to fill all that to begin with and even more surprising that what you might think can be useful or even valuable means **** to the rest if the world, it seems. I must have thrown away 10K euro's in value of stuff that nobody simply cared to pick up and I did put the effort in of putting up on second hand sites, contacted the local secondhand shop, etc etc.

I even had 24m3 of fire wood (old wood with nails and paint admittedly so not everyone wants it) that I had to mostly toss in the bin since nobody cared. So, is it just me or have people become way to picky (and then keep complaining about the economy and that they can't buy NEW stuff)? Also, pro-tip, don't collect that much

    Cheers,
    -P

I’ve been cleaning stuff up and out for a couple of years now as my direction in life has changed. I’ve also found it almost impossible to even give good stuff away sometimes and really good, almost new furniture is worth nothing - like not even $50 for something in as new condition that cost $500 a couple of years ago.

The world has got way too picky for ‘second hand crap’ IMO and just turned into a ‘I must have new’ society from what I’ve seen.

Very sad indeed but the local Opp shops have got some cracking stuff off me which they’ve been appreciative of so that’s where the second hand buyers must go - fine with me if it helps some people out that are struggling to get by.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    Hi,
Changing tech adds to the demise and loss of value in a massive way.
My first 19" monitor, a Sony Trinitron cos me $900 and I couldn't give it away after about 5 years. Had to pay the tip to take it.
Gave away a Leitz enlarger that I had lusted after since early teens, death by digital photography.
Early data projectors cost a year's wage and a spare globe was $700. Worth zip now.
My first hard drive was 20MB, so big I partitioned it!
Can't even give away flat screen TVs if they don't dispense Fine Wine and have blue teeth.
    Cheers

Few years ago, I bought a friend's collection of new & 2nd hand LR & Rover parts when he moved from Qld to Vic. There were 6 Falcon Ute with canopy & 6x4 trailer loads around 180 fruit boxes of new parts + larger loose parts (gearboxes diffs & cylinder heads) I offered the LR parts to the SLOWS first, (I was selling new Borg & Beck clutch kits for $50, new instruments for $20) there were about 15 members came, I then did the same for the Rover Car Club Guys & not one turned up. LR /RR parts ranged from 1948 to the last of the series & Rover parts from 1908 to 1984. I took the parts to a few swaps until I got back what I paid for them. I now if anyone is looking for parts on AULRO or one of the LR Facebook sites the parts are free if they need them but if they want them, they pay. My problem is what I have left around 20boxes no one seems to want, so I am now & are taking up room in my garage & under my bed. When I told the Rover car guys, I had taken some of the 2nd hand parts to the scrap I was told I should be keeping them but none of them has ever asked me for parts & they are worth more to me as scrap value. It is hard to know what to do with the parts, do I keep them in the hope that someone wants them & for my kids to throw them away when they clean out my house when I am gone or dump them. I am thinking of offering them on to a LR friend for free he is half my age not married has a collection of LR's waiting to be restored that may need some of the parts. I think the last option is the best. I never bought these parts to make a profit, I bought them for parts for my 80" & to help people who needed parts..

Yes, advancing tech does seem to do that. Funny thing is, there are some tubers out there that film crazy retro tech (like pc's and audio/video stuff) and some of that is fetching crazy prices on ebay. I own a technics sl1600 record player for example which is worth more now then when the entire stereo system was new. Not getting rid of that though.

Some videocards, of which I have a bout 4 I reckon are worth a lot too, but when I put them up for sale nobody wants them it seems so there is a large disconnect between asking price and selling price. As for car parts, I had some rare parts for a 1986 honda CRX which I am sure there are fans of out there but I had to toss them since nobody wanted them or at least, I was not able to find someone and/or he was not able to find me in time. In this internet age it is weird that we can connect with so many more people so much more quickly and efficiently but it is still hard to find a person for your pretty parts

What bothers me the most is that I must have thrown away 10's of K's in "worth" (not value it seems) in my eyes that is not coming back. Not that I want it back I guess but should I start a new life after our world trip, which does seem likely, I would need to spend that kind of money to get it all back in theory. One of those things I just can't understand well.

Ah well, the positive sidenote is that I feel like it is good that it's gone since it was of no value it seems so there was no need for me to store it over the years. Would have been a waste of money.

    Cheers,
    -P

I've started just junking stuff out of my shed now. Waste of time advertising it as if you get no genuine buyers (very rare) you get the weasels who whine that "I've only got X number of dollars will you take that" and make a stupid insulting offer.
I actually cut a roof rack up once and dumped it on the rubbish ready for the council to pick up. If they can afford to drive a car like a Landie/Tojo whatever they can afford a reasonable price for decent used equipment for it.

PS. Have a good trip Prelude.

My father was cleaning up and down sizing. Is eighty and decided was no longer going to swing on a spanner. Has bought a new Subaru which has manufacturers warranty and should see him out until cannot drive anymore

So was looking to off load some workshop kit. What was left had had a fairly easy domestic life. Metric, imperial and witworth spanners and sockets. In their sets not just a tool box full of spanners. All Gedore brand made in Germany

He gave them away in the end to a kid starting out as a mechanic as was annoyed with the people turning up and offering a few dollars for the lot as are just old tools. Their attitude was considered poor which did not help. Has a very low tolerance of people who thinks are trying one on. If they had been smart enough to have a back story about why wanted them and how it would help them achieve something would have been different. As he said am old but not a fool

I often wonder what's going to happen to all my old tools as I've some from my Dad's toolbox and many bought when I was an apprentice moons ago. Nothing seems to be appreciated these days so suspect most will disappear down the tip or just get junked until they rot away. Bit like me.
Only thinking last night about a German technical drawing set I still have in pristine condition and over 60 years old, what shall I do with that, as I suspect all that sort of stuff is now done on the computer?
New vehicle with a long enough warranty to see me out is on my cards as well now I'm 19.3/4s ... (Leap Year baby, work it out) and hopefully it'll be something I can get fixed in the places like Broome I still like to visit most years.

    Hi,
Rotring pens and stencils? Hmm, I last used them about 1986, still in the shed somewhere.

AlanH: thanks! The outlook of the trip did make things somewhat bearable.

Yes, tyre kickers (only it's not a car of course) seem to be around a lot. Admittedly, I found 250 bucks for a used welder barely worth the money although it is a proper brand one in decent condition. I too wonder "how often do I use it so what is it worth to me" and then you end up being one of those guys who seem to want to pay the least possible for decent stuff... In the end though I found one at a professional welder who was indeed sympathetic to me situation and was even kind enough to donate me half a bottle of gas.

Rotring pencils, stencils and even a fully adjustable drawing table went to the tip as well. Again, no one came for it.

I currently have a used set of goodyear wrangler MTR 235/85R16 up for sale. They are the kevlar new type that you guys down under get. They are not available in europe due to "dirty oil" or something used in their production. So they are rare as hens teeth, technically illegal to import (though I bought mine new from poland in 2016...) and still have some 14mm of thread life left (not used much) but STILL even if I go down to 400 AUD for the 4 there are no takers. A new one costs 300 USD on ebay and like I said, you can't even import them. Go figure.

In any case, back to the topic at hand, me thinks that next time I should avoid getting such a big shed and certainly not fill it to the rafters anymore!
