Ha! That brings back a memory. Dad had a 1954 MG Magnette car with the Lucas pump in the RHS of the boot. One day in the city (Hobart) it failed, and my job as a 13 yr old was to lay in the boot and thump the pump every time it stopped whilst he drove home about 20klms. Boot lid was shut of course!
In actual fact the pump was quite reliable once set up correctly. It would last for many years. Standard fitment in a Jaguar XJ6 until the very last of the Series 2's approx 1977 when they went to an in-tank submerged pump.
Two in the boot, one for each fuel tank. I've rebuilt many.
Most important that the points were set up correctly to ensure it "triggered" satisfactorily.
And of course in Mini Cooper "S", MGB, etc etc.
