    Just a word from an AC guy when I was discussing this for a customer fitout.

    Careful speccing r134as your refrigerant, theres words and rumours about that it may be next on the chopping block of refrigerants..

    how much truth there is to it I dont know but as an ancedote, you dont see it in new ac units or fridges anymore.

    At risk of stirring.... Vague memory of Those Days. (demise of R12 ) is, there was conspiratorial. concern that 134a was hiding a deadly secret, and shouldn't be trusted nor the government & greenies supporting forcible migration from '12'. to '134'.

    - We Tin Hats suspected a nefarious 'Conflict of Interests'.

    Forsooth, several years later and 'Testicular Cancer' had come out of the closet ....

    Costs seem way below reality as well,even allowing for market increases over the last 12 months.

    Dave,R134a will be around for decades to come,they said similar about R12,22,etc,as well.

    R22 is still available from wholesalers,R12 is still around if you know where to get it.

    R134a is a very common refrigerant,not only used in Auto air,but also commercial refrigeration,transport refrigeration,and many other refrigeration applications where R404a,R448,etc, cannot be used.
    The big recent change is most stand alone refrigeration cabinets going from generally 134a to Hydrocarbon refrigerants.
