Service NSW now gives odometer readings on rego information.

I was watching a tv interview with a bloke whose son had bought a Hilux with supposedly 230KK on it. Service NSW started last week to include kilometers for 3 years ( from green slip) on the rego check section of their site. Lo and behold 400KK plus on the Hilux. They had 4 calls in the first day for Odo fraud.
i thought I would try it on a couple of cars on Facebook marketplace.
I have been looking at Merc ML350s.
First one only one Odo reading. Hmm. Interstate car . Maybe a flood? And/or maybe crook roadworthy.
Second one . rego plate on a white Mercedes ML 350 was for a Black Porsche Cayenne and 3 odo readings different (lower ) than advertised. So the Porsche was maybe legit but The Merc who knows.
Just reinforced to me that there a LOT of scammers on Facebook Marketplace .
Funny thing was that the prices asked were lower than market but not much lower.

Yes lots of scams, usually they have ridiculously low prices which is a scam trigger but maybe they have cottoned on to that and think that a reasonable price will catch more of guard.
See a lot of scam ads for caravans where the van would be worth 60k plus and they put a 5k price tag on them.

Dad has an 09 ML350 and its a lovely car apart from the stupid 21" rims on it, the diesel V6 is a nice motor.

Oldest scam in the world I almost wanted to type but that must be taxes... Ok, a scam as old as odometers then.

My country started registering odo readings a long long time ago, maybe 25 odd years? Since a few years they register odo readings at every service as well not just once a year during MOT. Still, high milers like taxi company's still trick the system by driving the wheels of a car in the first two years (MOT exempt), hardly ever care about warranty and do servicing themselves and clock back the car just before the first MOT and put it up for sale as a low mileage car. It has made it a lot harder for the average joe to clock back their vehicles though so it is a good thing I guess. Here is hoping more countries get on board since indeed out of state (or in our case neighbouring country) cars can still be tampered with.

    Cheers,
    -P

    Hi,
Years ago in TAS, the odometer reading was a required field on the re registration form (or was it the MAIB compulsory third party form?).
Any how now with email and BPay, all they want is money.
    Cheers

I recently bought a Jag advertised with 94,000km on the speedo - which it has - on researching the car I found out that the engine was rebuilt and the speedo reset to zero - on further research I determined the vehicle actually has about 285,000km. Not such a big issue for me as the engine was rebuilt 94,000km ago, the gearbox replaced 70,000km ago, as was the rear diff, suspension and just about everything else in a restoration.

But yes winding back the speedo was common not long ago, but much more difficult with newer cars.

Not really,if you know how, some newer vehicles are apparently very easy to do,and being done.

Quite a few LC200’s have been done recently.

    Odometer readings*
    77,875 km. 27 October 2022
    76,985 km. 22 October 2021
    76,952 km. 6 November 2020

From my XT ute, they are all genuine although they are miles, not Km and it is the third time that speedo has been round while I've owned it

There was a RRS V8 on carsales last night. NSW dealer car.
Odo at about AFAIR 112KK for 3 years.
I wonder what the story is?
    Odo broken? unlikely.
It appears that nearly every luxury 4WD on facebook and Carsales seems a bit fishy.

In Vic you have to take a photo of your speedo reading and send it in so they can work out your ZLEV .

Maybe VicRoads are unaware of photoshop

Digital gauges are very easy to ‘reset’ to a new distance. Is a very common problem and the tool to do it is available for just a complete of dollars and easy to obtain

The car which has had this done to it will then be a problem for the new owner. This is due to the distance travelled being read by a number of computers in the car. They will have the correct mileage as only the dash mileage is changed. The new mileage on the dash then causes problems as the new number does not match what they are expecting to receive

In the UK this has been a problem not just by dodgy sellers but also by people who have PCP loans for unrealistic low mileage to keep the payment low winding theirs back before handing in the car to avoid charges for excess miles travelled

They have been collecting mileage from lots of places now to try and catch them out. Tyres shops, garages, glass replacement, air conditioning regas, breakdown services are examples but anywhere someone has contact with a vehicle can join. They will not tell you are collecting mileage

Mileage is captured at first MOT but that is after 3 years. These are newer vehicles often under finance.

Or the owner of a vehicle just wants a higher price for trade in value. Many dealers will not consider a 4 year old car with over 50k miles on it as stock so price offered is auction. Winding it back can add thousands to value for trade in
