Proposed laws to punish online misinformation

Something which I am sure Inc and co will be monitoring - but if passed will have big implications for on-line forums.

Millions of dollars in fines to punish online misinformation under new draft bill - ABC News

One of the dangers of laws like this is “who decides what is misinformation”.

I don’t envy the mods in policing this one if it is passed.

Apart from protecting children from porn etc., the only real reason for censorship is fear of the truth.

As for who will decide? That's easy. Goggle.

We all know that a lot of what you read one the internet is BS .

So If I declare that the New Defender is a piece of **** . (true)
Or indeed that real LandRover stopped being made with the introduction of Coil suspension. (false)
    ... Who decides if it's True / False / Misinformation / Opinion..

I can't see it working , especially with a lot of content one the Internet is now AI generated & it is programmed disinformation.

This is exactly the businesses that they are targeting. And while overseas entities are more difficult, they are not impossible to target - see the successful targeting of them about news here a couple of years ago (now being copied by Canada).

Many countries round the world have successfully implemented restrictions on what these can carry. While the companies may be based overseas, they have significant revenue in Australia, which is at risk if they do not comply. While a fine in Australia potentially could be ignored by an overseas entity, the bank that handles their Australian revenue will comply with a garnishee order.

Don't confuse opinion with misinformation, a polite term for lies.
