The point is it could be a great little 4WD. Not everyone is looking to tow or go touring around the country. Some people are looking for a small capable 4WD that u still can going 4WD diving in and camping with the emphasis on KISS principle.
I’ve had a LWB Suzuki 4WD Vitara for the past 16yrs and love going wheeling in it and the odd 1-2 overnight trips in it…
If I could afford one of these I would seriously consider it…
Hi,
On the Gibb River Track 1976, 2up on a motorcycle, got bogged in sand up over the rims.
We noticed a pair of feint tyre tracks ahead of us that looked like someone had rolled a set of tyres along the sandy track.
Some hours later we passed a Jimney that had made the tracks, parked by a creek, the driver was fishing.
That thing was as light as a lizard through sand, I was very impressed.
Cheers
Simple times, would've been the 3 cyl 2 stroke LJ50 back then, 750 kg, these days it would get lost in the corrugations if it didn't get run over by an overweight yank tank towing an overweight Van being driven by an overweight family.
I see the appeal of the relatively simple Jimny for those that like a manual box (self included) and the fun factor off road, but I think any trip more than an hour on the highway with the asthmatic, underpowered engine screaming around 4500rpm @ 110 chewing the same fuel as a diesel disco might get old quickly, ( I've driven the 3 door in the the past ).
Combine that with a noisy cabin, horrendous handling on corrugations and what could be dubious build ( though the Indians are improving rapidly ) and I'll keep my simple but comfortable and relatively powerful D2a for short distance, off road, and long distance fun in relative comfort.
They'd make more sense as an EV, or even a 1.5 litre turbo diesel with ( a lot ) lower highway revs
Hi,
I did meet one at Ayres Rock with about 6 Jerry cans across the bull bar and a few more in the back.
Driven by an older bushie who said he turned North off the Nullarbor and went overland till he got here.
Cheers
Lots of hungry sand around here, especially on hot days, yep they were great on the beach and swampy mud when I had them in the 90's ( stockman ute and sierra ) but hand on heart, I've never been stuck in a D2 either, despite times I thought I would.
Twice I have got to the to the top of a steep sandy climb involving a combo of grunt and good articulation where a mate in a Jimny couldn't ( Just not enough articulation on the cross ups despite hitting it with plenty momentum and trying slower as well)
Maybe the EV version wouldn't suit those places, but most of the world might have a place for a short range ( say 300k's to keep weight down) everyday city, suburban and short range 4W driver that could still be good fun on nearby tracks and beaches.
Petrol to keep the cheap version, but I've always thought a Diesel ( in auto as well ) with a lot lower highway revs would be a good thing .
IOW it's a niche vehicle, with zero competition in that niche. Sure, it will appeal, never said it wouldn't.
One thing it would be brilliant for, in 3 or 5 door form, would be a tagalong vehicle for a motorhome. Pull up, set up and head off on day trips to almost anywhere.
