How many Landrover are still on the roads

There are literally thousands of Series vehicles on farms all around the place just rotting away.

One of my Brothers worked in Weipa for many years,and being a shooter went to many properties all over the Cape.

Some of those properties have 10 or more LR wrecks just rusting away,at one place they made a fence out of them,I will have to dig out the pic I have of it,can’t seem to find it ATM.

There were also many wrecks of other vehicles and machinery.

How anyone worked out that 70% figure is anyones guess,but it is probably a long way off the mark no doubt.

There is no way 70% of Series vehicles would still be running,that is for sure.

From memory, it was something mentioned in LR marketing in the 1970's or thereabouts. The problem is that people are still using the same quote, even though nowadays we have a great many more Land Rovers of multiple types on the road so realistically it wouldn't hold true anymore.

And originally was almost certainly from a single survey in a restricted area.

Although, it needs to be remembered that Landrovers were in short supply , with orders exceeding manufacturing capacity from 1948 to some time in the early seventies, so very few would have been scrapped except for those truly beyond repair. And until at least about 1990, the company ensured that there was a lot of backwards compatibility, helping keep parts available for a lot longer than is usually the case - even today, there are few parts for Series Landrovers that are either hard to find or particularly expensive.

I agree when Mario and I was running our business, we found some parts where very hard to impossible to get for some of our customers. As Landrover where not making that part any more, even up to the D2 due to the age of the car, that they felt that it wasn't worth it. And Mario tried all his contacts suppliers, and even looked up car wreckers in Vic for some customers that where in Vic. And he would look at there web site to see if there was any being wrecked, and would direct customer to that wrecker. That's how far Mario went to find parts for our customers.

This even extends to D3's now, my mechanic told me a line from the fuel filter is no longer available, so he had to pinch some fittings from another pipe.

Gee I didnt know D3 are having trouble now. We did have a customer that has a D3 and he had nearly every thing replaced, engine/ transfer case/ sway bars etc also we got him a new head liner for inside the car that we had to wait for about 6/8 months, as it was coming from the UK. I am glad he wasn't to far from us as it came on a wooden wooden pallet, so he picked it up on his trailer. Heather

It may or may not be indicative, but I have (sort of) six Series Landrovers. One is converted to a farm trailer, one is a chassis plus axles and fuel tank, one is reduced to chassis, axles, gearbox, and a few panels, two are more or less complete, but not going, and one is on the road, fully operational, full rego, and went to Cooma in March - last used this morning for cutting firewood.

I am not sure how they would go about it AND since when records were kept but perhaps when a buildersplate is not stricken of the record through the wreckers (happens here parts of europe) the car is technically still in existence and thus can be seen as "still on the road", perhaps in rest :) I can easily imagine many MANY land rovers would not be wrecked from that pov no. Though, anything disco 1 and up is certainly going to be way less.

Yes Land Rover used to say that 75% of all Land Rovers produced were still working away.
Regarding parts availability, it used to be the rule that a manufacturer had to support a car for 10 years after it ceased production. Recently one manufacturer (cannot recall who it was) said that they would be support cars for 12 years after model production stopped. They were pushing this as a "Green" marketing thing.
