Paint stripper that works on multiple layers

I found the best way to remove paint from my Dormobile's panels was to apply paint stripper (Bunnings) leave for 15 - 20 minutes, then remove with a wire wheel in a drill or an angle grinder [smilebigeye] It comes off easily and leaves a nice clean surface.

Certainly easier than trying to scrape paint off with a scraper and damaging the surface, just don't be heavy handed and let the wire wheel do the work.

Maybe you didn't have to remove as many coats of paint as the Army had applied to my Series II GS.

The gentleman who sold it to me was ex Army and he claimed that often when the 'top brass' were going to visit the camp the vehicles were re-painted. The 'top brass' must have visited the camp many times where this vehicle was based !

I'm not a fan of rotary wire brushing aluminium panels so I'll stick with multiple applications of stripper for now.

Mind you I did have some luck in the past lifting off sheets of paint with a scraper, then using paint stripper on the base layer.

That might explain why the layers of paint weren't stuck together that well, must have been all the dirt left on when they re-painted each time !

I was told that when they repainted they 'masked' the windows by applying a layer of Vaseline, just wash it off when the paint has dried.

Liky any chemical it does have its limits and it gets saturated or vaporizes. Leaving it on longer or applying it thicker is the only thing that might work, apart from a complete dip perhaps. Else you need to indeed do it multiple times unfortunately. There is other stuff that can doe the same job like natrium hydroxide but that WILL damage aluminium so not really an option.

From my experience Army contractors also view repainting an engine as "refurbishing".

If you're stripping paint and are unsure of what it is (enamel, thinners based acrylic, etc) take precautions against dust.

The old dulon acrylic tinters contained 26% lead solids, as written on the cans.
