To be honest, never heard of him. I know of The Pogues but never had any of their records.
Only found out today that he passed earlier this month.
Probably remembered more if you were in the UK during the Punk era, not sure whether the Pogues got much air time here.
Nick Cave & Johnny Depp were at his funeral.

I did wonder if many in Australia knew him.
Look up Fairytale of New York with Kirsty Macoll.
Also worth looking up where the band name came from

Did a great version of And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda:
Not as big out here as in the UK, but well known on the indy music scene.
Yeah, heard the news on the radio last week but I hadn't heard of him.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
Downloaded it last night & listened a couple of times today.
Interesting to read the background to the song and the artists that have done covers.

Maybe not as well known here as in the UK and Ireland.....but he's been well-enough known to many here, I'm sure.
Interestingly, ABC Classic FM played an instrumental version of Fairytale Of New York this morning and I was struck anew with what a beautiful melody it is. Mind you, I kept hearing that wonderful voice in my head.

SubscriberI saw the Pogues in concert on several occasions and they had a large following here in Australia, had several sold-out concerts at the Palais and in other cities in Australia.
Shane MacGowan was widely and legitimately viewed as a poet.
"Pogues" by the way is the shorter version of "Pogues Mahone", which was their original band name and which the BBC objected to because it means "kiss my arse" in Gaelic.
Edit: the funeral was wild, they were actually dancing in the Cathedral - there's good video of it on Youtube: RTE, the Irish equivalent of the ABC, evidently broadcast it. (Also, I changed "McGowan" to "MacGowan".)

I know the names of very few members of even well known bands.
Speaking of which, Jeffrey Foskett, a member of The Beach Boys, died last week. I’d never heard of him but knew their music,

Remember him well, as does my liver.
Just got around to watching the funeral on YouTube.
Got me thinking of other friends now long gone. I guess we all need to do this at the start of a new year.
