Thread: Colour matching pine kitchen cabinets stain

Hello All,

Can someone identify the colour of the stain that provides a close match to the colour shown in the photograph please? I am tried a couple of coats of Cabot's Maple oil based interior stain and it is still not dark enough. What stain is darker than maple? Is it walnut or cedar or Mahogany? Or another colour? I did try Cabot's Jarrah on a scrap of pine and it looked too red - not the dark honey colour that the kitchen cabinet is.

I am attempting to colour match a pine kitchen cabinet that I am re-purposing. The sides of the cabinet were cut off by a previous owner. I have made a new pine frames and then used the VJ style pine lining boards. The only issue is that the natural pine is a very pale colour when compared to the dark honey colour of the kitchen cabinet fronts.

I am not sure how well the colours in the photograph are presented via AULRO - however I accessed the photo that seemed to have the best colour match to my kitchen cabinet ... from https://dgi.com.au/wp-content/uploads/cabinet05.jpg (22nd December 2023).

Step 1 Select 'Interior'
Step 2 Select Timber Type = Pine
Step 3 Select Product = Cabot's Stain & Varnish - Oil Based
Step 4 Select Colour Mahogany

I did try and get the Mahogany stain and varnish from my local Bunnings and it was either not on the shelf or not one of the colours they chose to order in routinely.

our kitchen mainly and other has Wattle English Mahogany stain with Wattle gloss Estipol .

This in on pine and other timbers , there is no way you could get a description of dark honey , deep red would be my take on it .

If the link works seems there are many types on Mahogany ours is closer to the furthest right but deeper .

Thank you for the name of the colour and the link to Watyl paints. I opened this post after I came in from the shed applying the first coats to the kitchen cabinet ends. I checked for replies on this thread before I left on what turned out to be a quest.

I went to our Independent hardware store and while they had Cabot's stain and varnish they did not have any Mahogany. The friendly bloke did suggest that I go to another shop that is one of three specialist paint places in town. It was one that I drove past to get to the hardware store. It is sort of tucked away from the road and you just forget it is there. Well, I went there about 10:00 am on a Saturday. Sure enough they were closed. I then double-backed and went to the second specialist paint place - they too were closed. Ditto with the third supplier who specialises in just selling paint and paint related products. All of them had gone on holidays on the 21st of December and will be re-opening on the 8th of January 2024.

I then retraced my tracks and went to a Mitre 10 who are about 500 metres from the independent hardware store that I first went to.

No Cabot's stain and varnish in a Mahogany. So, I gave up on Cabot's as a lost cause. The only oil based Mahogany was Wattyl Colourwood Stain & Varnish Satin Dark Mahogany - Wattyl Colourwood Stain & Varnish Satin Dark Mahogany 500mL. The dark Mahogany was the only Mahogany in store so I grabbed it.

Thank you for the link to the Mahogany woodworking projects. My use of a combined stain and varnish might achieve different results to your using English Mahogany stain - then once the stain is dry - adding an estapol over the stain may produce a different result because I used the stain and varnish that was already combined on a tinl

Well the cabinets ends do look a lot better now. The natural pine finish was just not cutting it.
