Advice On Which Car To Buy

I have a son who is after a replacement car. He wants a twin cab 4x4 ute.

This son of mine is not very mechanically minded

He has asked me this. For around the same money he can get a 2017/18 Triton with around 120 to 150kays, or 2016/17 Ranger with 160 to180 kays.

Assuming both come with good service history, what would be a better choice?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Ya can't frighten the Triton. I think they're somewhat underrated. Ozscott is very happy with his. The Ford seem to be fashionable, so therefore command higher prices. Unless the young bloke is trying to make a fashion statement, all other things being equal, I'd say go the Mitsi.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

There are fewer Mitsibushi Tritons go through the workshop where Marcus works

Don't like giving recommendations... I will say this though. Son had a 3.2 6 speed Ranger that he sold at around those Ks. Had it regularly serviced. Loved it, never let him/her down apart from an early thermostat failure, known issue. Another family bloke I know, not so good on the servicing, had a total transmission failure at less than 150k. Ford didn't cover it due to his negligence. Cost him a bomb.

Mitsu, oth, are known for covering a known engine fault even if it occurs at 300k. Dunno if that applies to everything they do, but when it's a known manufacturing defect they seem to come to the party. Pity they don't make Discoveries.

The Triton, mate had one that had done over 800k and still going strong until it was stolen.
We have a Mitsubishi Colt that is fast approaching 400k and still going well with regular servicing.
I also know of a few people with Rangers that are happy but also a few that have been told by the servicing mechanic to sell it ASAP due to approaching problems.

Said transmission failure, possibly. Heard of a few, if the internet is any guide of course.

Triton all day,a couple of mates have them no issues.
As Ian said they are underrated.

As for the Fords,we have a couple at work and won't buy them again.

Which engine is he looking at in each?
A Ranger from 2016 will be the first facelift version, a PX mark II, so it'll have the 3.2 five cyl, or the 2.2 four cyl Puma engines with 6 speed auto or manual (no bi-turbo 10speed auto).
The 2.2 with 6 speed manual is the same combo as the 2.2 puma Defender. The Ranger tune of this engine does have more power (and marginally more torque) than in the Def, but it always feels underdone and a bit gutless in the Ranger.
The 5cyl would be the pick, but they both can suffer from burnt pistons due to sticky injectors (refer to any of DazzaTd5's posts on this!!).

The Mitsi dual cabs only have the 2.4 diesel, the 2.4 petrol is only in single cabs I think. And it'll be a 5 speed auto (can't recall if this is an Aisin, a Jatco or Mitsi's own). Dunno if this year of Triton was any better or worse than the others for chassis cracking due to the short wheelbase and overloaded trays??

I've driven loads of Rangers and, in the pick-up world, nothing comes close in terms of refinement or handling. They do a passable impression of being vaguely civilised, everything else feels like a horse cart in comparison.

That being said, if I was spending my money, I'd be looking at the Triton, seems better value for money to me.

I have a late 2016 Mazda BT 50 ( Ranger clone ) This model came with a DPF and is very very thirsty, on a par with a Disco2 v8 petrol. The engine went at 50000 k . I have just finished helping a mate put a new engine in his 2014 ranger 240000k. Failed no 3 piston the same as mine. They have problems with the egr cooler failing, the oil pump failing, injectors failing and auto gearboxes failing if not serviced at every 50000 k or so. All these problems can be sorted but if you are not mechanically minded would cost heaps. They do drive nice for a ute and are also good off road doing most things they are meant to do very well. If you can find one with the egr delete and egr cooler bypass done, a gear type oil pump fitted and an external transmission cooler and thermo bypass fitted they could be worthwhile. Quite a few have had these mods done.

    Thanks everyone for your input/advice.

Has had a slight change of mind and looks like he is about to pull the trigger on a Pajero Sport.
