When looking at the video (the longer one on the webs) you can clearly see the lights on the ship go off. They only turn back on a bit before she hits. I would NOT want to be on that bridge (of the ship that is) when that happens. All that is left is a bunch of alarms that go off (if they have a battery backup) an emergency light that should come on and emergency radio on battery backup and perhaps handy-talks.

What I do wonder though is how you manage to kill all power on board a ship that is just setting off?

We'll probably, if ever, hear the words "human error" down the line.

    Or Sabotage?

Who can say at this point in time what Cargo was on board her? Appears Containers lend them selves to all sorts of Mischievous & illegal operations. Time will eventually get to the truth, hopefully.

Hell, some of those drivers really did miss Death by a Gnat's Pubic Hair!

Was the Prop actually turning & one would think it would be going like the clappers in a bid to Stop or Slow the inevitable. The volumes of Black Exhaust smoke issued before the collision appeared well out of the ordinary.

The Port Anchor having been dropped may change her direction assuming it held fast of course & was it strong enough?

Is/was she a twin Screw vessel &/or electrically powered to drive any propulsion or Steering Modules?

No doubt it will all come out in the wash one day. My opinions only.

I think you will find most cargo ships, especially large ones are single screw.

This will be one heck of a clean up, I hope it had some outrageously good insurance!

It will be intereting to see what risk mitigations get put in place and what design changes come about assuming the bridge is rebuilt.

Edit: Looks like the POTUS has said the federal government will pay for the replacement of the Bridge, and the US Defence engineers new top priority is the salvage operation.

    Cheers

What has surprised me is the sheer number of YouTubers putting up their 2 cents worth of discussion on this event.
I haven't watched them as there is sure to be a number of conspiracy theorist among them.

Yes, we've been watching a TV series in Free To Air called Marine Disasters (actually, it has a couple of different names, e.g., Disasters at Sea, that just one of them. It's a bit like Air Crash Investigation). The recording device has been instrumental on solving some of them.

Re this event, I'll wait until I see the event covered with input from the NTSB.

"OI! Who you callin' a YouTuber"? Us lot will dig the dirt no fear.

The circumstances do tend to leave it wide open for a Conspiracy or two, you have to admit. Just hope it is not the same crowd who are looking into Boeing.

They've said pretty specifically that it wasn't an act of terror at the very least.

So far, but I bet London to a Brick it will give someone the idea for later on, but tell that to the road-workers that were filling Potholes in the Road surface & then "KERSCHLUMP". It would have been a real life terror experience for them before they exited this life.
I hope it was quick for them but if they weren't crushed by a bridge component they would have drowned. I doubt they had little Life-rafts waiting for them.

Tom Clancy wrote a book, Debt of Honour I think, in which someone flew a fuelled up airliner into the Capitol building in Washington, around 7 years before the September 11 attacks...... Life imitates art.
