Cradle Mountain Nat Park has to be on the list but I don't know specific tracks. Have a good time.

I would say Cradle Mountain and Port Arthur (entire peninsular not just the historic site) were the highlights of my trip. We went in the first two weeks of January in 2005.

However if you want to cut the cost of the boat then how about you take the car on the boat and anyone else travelling with you flys.
When I went it was $55 for the car and about $145 per person (my wife and myself) for a day sail. Whereas others we spoke to did the above and it was around $50 to fly Melbourne to Hobart (or Launceston?).

Night sail is more expensive as you need a cabin or a seat (like a plane). They did day sails back then during the Summer holidays and I assume they still do.

i went over the start of this year 4 adults and car return $1100.00 buisness class

we did the east coast and back over the great lakes

port arthur is great and dont miss it the great lakes is something from deliverence dont stop unless you have to

very nice place next time i go it will be in the defender and down the west coast . which is the wild west and very pretty ive been told

We did it in Jan 2005. Spent 3 weeks and pretty much went down the west coast and back up the east coast.

We had this book http://www.roving.com.au/ and it was good although the tracks rated medium are really easy and the hard rating is really medium. I would not recommend doing some of the tracks on the west coast on your own. The tracks are awsome fun but there are some really boggy bits with no trees around to winch out.

Haha, i like the comment about the great lakes rangieman ! i thought exactly the same when i took my rangie down in march last year, good dirt roads though 90- 100kph and some pretty cool scenery from almost moonscape to eerie forest. You dont need to be in a hurry in tassie as everything is so close,i went overnight on the boat and my wife and daughter flew which is the cheapest option. Weather was great, 30 degree's when we got to Hobart, Port arthur was great even though i had been probably 4-5 times before but it has changed alot since i last went, also went to Sheefield for my mates wedding and stayed in Deloraine which is a pretty town close to some great mountain ranges and an easy drive to Cradle Mt.

I will be heading over with a group of four cars with all of them being pretty well equiped. Likely will spend about a week on the wild west coast and then tour around for the next week. Dont know if we will make it down to Port Arthur though...missed it last time I was there so maybe I should make the effort.

I had thought about the boys heading over on the boat and sending the girlies on the plane, but that means we would have to go into Launceston and then back out. Might just go on the boat and take a crappy seat...

Adam I will check out that book...have seen it before but thought it was just a bit brief. I guess you cant expect as voluminous books as Vic etc cause tassie is a small place...
