OK, I've read a fair bit on whether a spare tyre can be successfully mounted to the bonnet of a TD5 defender. Most issues relate to the TD5 engine being taller and hence the strengthing brackets being taken out of the bonnet to fit it in, which in turn weakens the whole thing (which also explains why an older TDi bonnet will not fit a TD5 vehicle). I've seen where Opposite Lock does a chequer plate mounting bracket thing to strengthen the bonnet so I assume its possible to do this.
What I'm really after is some practical experience. has anyone fitted these to a TD5 defender? or has anyone re-inforced their bonnet to take the weight of a spare tyre - particularly an alloy extreme rim. Any info would be great.
Also, to clarify I don't like to use roof-racks and the spare wheel mount at the rear is a no-go for now.
cheers
Jimmy

I think the best bet at this stage is to go with the opposite lock version. The tyre mount is $185, then the chequer plate is $240 - but if you can get the chequer for less it makes the whole process cheaper.Originally Posted by Blknight.aus
i've also heard that the south african defenders use bonnet mounts a fair bit - in game parks. there must be someone out there who can verify this, and possibly point me in the right direction.

From what I'm told, an earlier model bonnet is the go. According to Warren at M.R. the hire mobs at Hervey Bay put early model bonnets on their hire TD5's.
I'm thinking of the same thing and a rear swing out carrier for when I need 2 spares, which is whenever I go on trips. Mate put a Series 2 mount on his 200 TDI, but of course that's not a TD5. By the way, a standard alloy rim weighs no more or less than a Discovery steel or a Series wheel with 750/16.

I'd hate to think what the bonnet mounts would look like after some decent corrugations.
I've toyed with getting a spare bonnet for trips & putting a shovel or highlift there - but a wheel/tyre is too heavy I reckon

I placed the spare tyre on my series III on the bonnet hook the other day. You cannot see over the thing. It restricts your view in front of the vehicle by about 50%. In these days of the 4wd backing over kids mentality that seems to be circulating the media every few months, I could imagine getting pulled over for having it on the bonnet.
Outback touring would be a different matter all together but not for every day use.
You could mount the spare, pick, axe and shovel brackets on the roof if you needed them that badly.
ok I can build you a kevlar bonnet with extra bracing? But it will cost. lol

I agree mounting the rimon the bonnet restrits the downward view. Lucky for me I carry 2 spares in the rear of my tray back and on long trips 2 tyres off the rims. I'd suggests a bearmach rear wheel carrier for the initial spare and then tyres off the rim on a roof rack for the rest.

the previous owner fiited a bonnet mount on my fender, he did numerous extended outback trips in cluding the cape with no problems, since i have owned the fender its been to lawn hill national park in the gulf country and the simpson desert including the odanatta and strzelecki tracks wiith no problems apart froom one rivit popping offOriginally Posted by Tusker
vision touring and hi-way not to bad, tough off roading can be a pain when wheel placement is required
i just need a rear swing away carrier so i don't have to carry the second spare on the roof
