I'm in the same boat of not being able to afford it but the entire front end made of Kevlar and carbon fibre would be great!

    Full tilt front end, interesting.

I think I could produce a bonnet with bracing for extra accessories quite cheap, only a matter of modifing the mould. So much to do so little time.

    Bonnet Mount

Well, I have a home made one fitted to the Stage 1 and it has been with us to the Cape, Simpson etc, and yes it is a little restrictive but only in extreme circumstances. I don't use it for general running but it has not damaged the bonnet one iota.

    Hi jimmy
I have fitted a spare wheel to a td5 bonnet.
using the wheel fixing bracket from a 300 defender bonnet, with chequer plate covering the centre section of bonnet also on the two side bits of the bonnet ( hard to explain).
The chequer plate strenghens the bonnet very well, but the vehicle was only being used on roads in the uk.So I dont know how the bonnet would hold up offroad, your guess is as good as mine.
The best way to go is with a swingaway on the rear.

Most issues relate to the TD5 engine being taller and hence the strengthing brackets being taken out of the bonnet to fit it in, which in turn weakens the whole thing (which also explains why an older TDi bonnet will not fit a TD5 vehicle). I've seen where Opposite Lock does a chequer plate mounting bracket thing to strengthen the bonnet so I assume its possible to do this.

What I'm really after is some practical experience. has anyone fitted these to a TD5 defender? or has anyone re-inforced their bonnet to take the weight of a spare tyre - particularly an alloy extreme rim. Any info would be great.

Also, to clarify I don't like to use roof-racks and the spare wheel mount at the rear is a no-go for now.

    cheers

Ok so now Im going to go the Dual Swingaways on the rear....

Where do ya get em or can yo uget some good photos of yours with measurements so I can make em up?

Is it just me or does it look like those things protrude past the side of the bodywork?

ok, the double swing-away bar looks the goods. But the real reason for me wanting a strong and secure bonnet mount was that I intent to have a full motor bike swing arm attached to the rear crossmember. The idea has been in the pipeline for a while and should work ok for up to 100kgs. This will be for a return trip from Queensland to WA accross the top. The bike-bar will be bolted on so it can be removed in favour of a propoer swing away tyre mount down the track.

Once complete I should have all equipment, beding, fridge etc etc mounted in or under the car - no roof racks, no trailer, no worries.

    I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks for all the feed back so far. It looks like I might be the guinea pig for the opposite lock bonnet mount system.

    Cheers
    Jimmy
