Noted. We will not be using sandpaper![]()
I totally forgot I started this thread and to update it. Comes with the age I suppose...
In the end after some contact with other overlanders it turns out that the best solution was going to be a Thetford cassette toilet. The main reasons are already discussed above but boil down to this:
- dedicated black water tank with wheels and thus portable
- composting and moist issues solved
- modified with a ventilation kit it can run without chemicals, ie. can be disposed of anywhere
My main concern was that composting toilets do not really compost. You use them for way too short for composting to take hold or even finish. In no time you tie up that (plastic) bag and toss it. Also as mentioned with some bowel problems now and then it would not be a nice "solid composter" but a bloody mess. I am convinced they would work perfectly, were it not for that.
The second thing I considered was a marine style macerator toilet hooked up to a black/grey water tank. We would also dump or grey water in there from shower, sink, etc. which in my mind would dilute the contents and make for a nice and easy dumping. However, that tank is fixed to the car and you would almost certainly need to go into camper grounds to empty them with the added disadvantage that it would probably cost you perhaps a overnight stay to make use of them. Not too bad but problematic if you are off grid and the tank fills up. I'd be more bothered having to dump (part) of a black water tank in nature than a grey water tank.
So, I added a smaller grey water tank to the design which you can empty anywhere where it is allowed (we use biological soaps anyway) and have a much smaller black waste water tank that can be carried (rolled) into a bog standard toilet and emptied there since there are no chemicals in there, which you should be able to do everywhere pretty much.
In order to keep the smells from becoming a problem I've added a ventilation kit with carbon filter that should last us a good while:
Door-model
Cheers!
