LPG from Sydney to Cairns to Top End, to Alice, to Darwin to Perth and back to Sydney

    Hi All,

I thought I might start a thread that will not only help me but others that are planning the "Great Escape" whether now or in the future.

I have a duel fuel (ULP + LPG), system in my '93 Disco' and I want to get away for a while and see the country I've always loved best. (Song, "Hey True Blue" playing in background.)

I want to know how far north I can get in QLD on LPG before I have to drop back to ULP. Recent, up to date info' would be best and I'm hoping and guessing that some servos will be putting in LPG to cater for those of us doing the "wander" in the not to distant future.

From the Top End in QLD I intend to drive down through to Alice, not necessarily by bitumen, as I would like to get the wheels dirty when I can and get away from the procession of "Grey Nomads" that are blowing their kids inheritance out there (you know who you are!)

From Alice I’ll drive up to Darwin ( all mudcrabs and large fish should leave NT territorial waters now), and then take my time driving down the West Coast until I get to Albany and from there I’ll drive back to the Central Coast via Sydney.

I’ll be towing a 6m Steber (’68 restored) which does run on ULP although I am thinking of doing an LPG conversion on that too as I have done on my Disco’. The boat shouldn’t be any harder as long as I put on oil injection so that the motor still gets it’s oil along with it’s fuel.

Any ideas on a spares kit would be will received, although being a Disco, I expect the girl to be bullet proof as she has been for the last 4 years (insert manic laughter!) Seriously, she has never left me on the side of the road although the occasional loss of aircon’ has been irritating.

Those that have done this type of expedition I would love to hear from as well as those of you who have done portions of this intended trip.

    TIA,
    Pete’

The above link will take you to the LPG Australia websites planner map. You can enter your origin & destination and it will give you the name and address of every servo with LPG along your route. It will also give you incremental distances. That way you can calculate how far you might need to run on ULP at any stage.

I think it uses the whereis program, as some of the navigational directions look very similar.

I'm sure this will provide some entertainment as well as useful planning.

    Hi Pete
Make sure you "phone ahead" on your trip,as to the availability of LPG,just because they sell it doesnt mean they have it.They had a disscusion on the non availability on the wireless a couple of weeks ago. There was a guy stranded in Fitzroy Crossing with a dedicated gas Falcoon and no prospect of LPG for a week.He put the missus on a bus to Broome to fly back to Perth and had to pay big dollars to get his car trucked to Broome to get gas and continue the trip.
Apparantley the big problem is there is a huge increased demand for LPG in remote areas and they cant keep the delivery up to demand.
Make sure you are in contact with us WA AULROians when you are over here,Im sure you will get offers of free overnite parking spots and trips.Im 160ks out of Perth on Albany hwy(Williams) yell out if you are passing thru, you are welcome.

    Hi LandyAndy,

Hopefully because I have both LPG (70ltr) and ULP (91ltr), I'll get through most places although I would like to stay on LPG as much as possible.

From what you say, getting stuck will be an expensive option!!

I'll also be keen to catch up with fellow AULROians where I can and intend to have a running journal on my website for those that maybe want to stop by and check out the trip.

I'll be hoping to meet as many Landrover owners as possible along the way. You can always tell a LR owner from "that look" (almost hunted), that they all have in their eyes!

If you think of anything else, please let me know!

    Cheers, Pete'
