What car would you / have you considered for a big lap or RTW trip?

I did not want to hijack the "big lap" topic but it did bring back memories!

Before I got bitten by the LandRover bug or more accurately, before the virus flared up again, I had the dream to make a RTW trip for decades (Round The World trip). As my life has progressed and times change I had different ideas on how to do that. A small list of cars I had in mind:

    • mercedes 408D 4wd with the om617 turbo diesel engine. I wanted to build a woodburning stove in there and all Yes, this was over a decade before the pound-sign-vanlife era
    • honda accord aerodeck. The model from the 80's with the little window in the roof. After that I found the:
    • honda civic shuttle AWD also know as the vanogan in the US I believe.
    • honda prelude 1980

Yes a lot of Honda, go figure with my forum name Except for the first maybe all the other vehicles were never considered to be "proper" cars to undertake a journey like this. In the 90's most of the world was not paved yet. These days you could probably get away with it... not sure. In any case, what kind of vehicle have you ever considered taking on a (big) trip that was never really meant for it?

    Cheers,
    -P

    Hi,
In the 60s I saw a slide show from a couple of blokes who did London to Singapore in a VW beetle. Photos of amazed locals taken from the sunroof as they passed trucks bogged in mud.
They couldn't see the snow chains that paddle wheeled the bug along on its floor pan.
    Cheers

Goldwing or BMW 1200 Adventure, not sure that my body would cope these days.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

First wife and I were close to going on the lap in a 72 Kombi. My sister and BIL went all over the place in a 1300 Beetle. Those old Dubs had awesome traction.

First wife and I didn’t go. Probably a good thing as one of us would have died and the other would have gone to jail. We later had trouble living in the same State as each other.

This was a young, Pommie bloke, Rupert, who drove his Citroen from Blighty to South Africa and then had it shipped to Perth, Australia.

The photo is at Home Valley Station, on the Gibb.

His original plan was around Oz, Perth to Perth and leave the vehicle in Perth, but I think, after all he'd done with it, he was taking it home.

He probably had to take it out of the country, to avoid import duties.

That 2CV wasn't a bad choice. Reliable, easy to fix, versatile, cheap to run. And you could drive it over a ploughed paddock without breaking any eggs in a basket!

I remember Rupert saying that there was a bloke in the UK that would throw a second diff into one, for not a lot of money.

    AWD only, obviously, but still!

Don't they pay a bond for a carnet? Bet Prelude can answer that.
