Tales from the trip: yabbies for dinner

After leaving Boulia, we had planned to go back into Diamantina NP, to the
campground at Gumhole, which is supposed to be very nice. BUT...in the
rain the river had come up 4m or so, and campers at Gumhole were surrounded,
their little camp an island. (Ranger Barbara had had to wade through chest deep water to check that they were okay and when we met her at Hunters Gorge she was still soaking wet…the fellas were quick to notice this fact, and that she had no bra on!!) So, the fact that the roads were still closed into Diamantina NP and the camping area inundated, meant we had to find somewhere else to camp...so we chose the Georgina River. We pulled up before the bridge (it wasn't there last trip we did out that way in 1985, back then the road wound through and across the Georgina Channels) and camped on Midgingar Waterhole. We had 3 days there waiting for our next lot of
travelling companions (Nissan Patrol…oh well, not everyone drives Landies). We fished, we walked, we relaxed!! The fishing was poor but the yabbies were on the bite and every time the traps were checked there were more yabbies, some of them a reasonable size. We also found some pigs here and shot one, taking the back legs to eat. We had roast pork, curried pork and a pork based pasta meal out of those 2 legs. We had also agreed that each vehicle would bring a piece of meat suitable to roast, so while on the Georgina we had a couple of roasts, the most notable the "black tie dinner", roast pork (not the wild stuff but supermarket bought variety) with apple sauce, roast potatos and sweet potato, roast pumpkin, roast onions and gravy, eaten at a table set with lace tableclothes and candles. Red wine, white wine and champagne. YUM!! The following night the 9 of us shared in an entree of yabbies cooked on the BBQ with garlic butter.

Black Tie Dinner...it was great fun to get dressed up (only the top half mind you...the fellas still had the shorts on) and tasted pretty good too!!

First load of about 40 yabbies that we shared
