I used to just scrape the brown stuff off the outside with a knife and use it for another 6-12 0r whatever months. Worked fine. I don't think they could be called ceramic more like dolomite or chalk rock.

Hello All,
I use a Stefani water filter that uses ceramic water filter cartridge that have a serviceable life of 6 months. Instead of throwing them into the bin are there any alternative uses other people have put the ceramic filters to? It seems like a shame to throw them away. I have attached a photograph of the ceramic filter cartridge for your ready reference.
Kind regards
Lionel

Everyone I know who uses them does just that.

Lionel, I sent your query to my sister, who sent this reply:
I've wondered the same thing. We broke some up and put (just the ceramic bits, not plastic) the pieces behind the retaining wall before we topped up the soil once. But that was just a one off. I have read that they are good for water absorption and if you break them up and spread them out and then cover with compost, they're good but I don't know if that's true or not. I'm thinking of trying it with our current one.

Hello Saitch,
Thank you for your reply and for passing the query onto your sister. In the interim I fell back to my horticultural training - that included irrigation and drainage. I wonder how the filter cartridges would go in a wicking type of arrangement covered up in either a large plant pot or positioned in a garden bed within the root zone. Where the irrigation pipe is attached to the filter cartridge and connected up to the water source. Some drip irrigation arrangements feature a button emitters that can be fitted to the main irrigation line. The button emitters have multiple outlets that thinner delivery lines are connected to. One such thin 'spaghetti' line could be connected to a single used filter cartridge. Yep, total overkill. At least it is a possible use for the old filter cartridge and they are not just thrown away.
Kind regards
Lionel

The porous nature might lend itself to use in aquaponics or garden decorative pond, replacing clay balls. Bacteria take residence in the pores in the clay balls, breaking down fish waste into a form that plants love, leaving little nutrient for algae, keeping water clear. But you'd need a few. Question as to how to rejuvenate the porous nature.
