These are REAL bodies...reckon I might go take a look
MEDIA RELATIONS“GETTING UNDER YOUR SKIN !”
Amazing exhibition of real human bodies finally comes to Brisbane in September 2006 - “The real 3D journey of our bodies!”
(Brisbane, Australia - 14 August 2006) - The RNA Showground, Brisbane has been announced as the next location in Australia to host the internationally acclaimed AMAZING HUMAN BODY EXHIBITION, which opens to the public on Friday 1 September 2006 for 7 weeks only in Brisbane until 22 October, 2006!
This spectacular and highly educational exhibition recently concluded an extensive tour of Sydney, Adelaide and Perth where more than 200,000 people from all walks of life and all age groups marvelled at the complexity and intricacy of the real human body. The final few weeks in each city were total “sell-outs” with visitors queuing for many hours to see the wonder of the real human body in a way that has never been seen before in Australia. More than 360 schools groups, both primary and secondary schools, have visited the exhibition showing students a unique and complex three dimensional “text book” of anatomy – the real human body.
This is the first time (and possibly last) that an exhibition of this nature will been seen in Brisbane.
The AMAZING HUMAN BODY EXHIBITION features more than 18 aesthetically posed whole body specimens, including transparent vertical and horizontal body slices, together with more than 400 individual anatomical specimens. Comparison of healthy and diseased organs will graphically highlight the relationship between health and disease – illustrating the importance of a healthy lifestyle!
The AMAZING HUMAN BODY EXHIBITION will explore topics such as health, anatomy and physiology through the study of real human bodies that have been preserved through a revolutionary technique called plastination.
Plastination is a technique invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977 at the University of Heidelberg to preserve specimens for medical education. The process replaces the body’s water, tissue and fats with special plastics that harden after vacuum-forced impregnation.
The preservation process provides the flexibility and strength needed to have freestanding bodies-in-motion, as well as the preservation of organs, tissues, circulatory and nervous systems in their true-to-life form without the use of glass cases and formaldehyde. Using the technique of plastination, the body specimens enable us to see the many organs and systems under our skin.
The exhibits (or plastinates) are divided into many specialised areas including locomotion, circulation, digestive, respiration, urogenital, reproductive and nervous systems, allowing visitors to examine the body’s role in everyday activities.
A visitor to the Sydney exhibition observed: "Excellent exhibition! Such a wonderful learning tool and eye opener! As a nurse the detailed exhibits are great to see, in an otherwise closed body system, this material is a bonus.” And a librarian said: “This exhibition was very fascinating. It shows that you should take better care of your body so that it takes care of you. It also made me not want to smoke – ever!”
“The exhibits seek to inform the public of the value of healthy lifestyle choices and the physical consequences of harmful habits,” said Assoc. Prof. Chris Semsarian of the Heart Foundation of NSW. “Special education programs are set up for both primary and secondary school students. We want to help them understand and appreciate their complex bodies, to inform and motivate them - to help them act in a more healthy way!”
The AMAZING HUMAN BODY EXHIBITION is an innovative juxtaposition of science and culture – a captivating display of our body that is amazing, astounding, spectacular and sometimes confronting!
The exhibition is supported by the Childrens’ Medical Research Institute, National Heart Foundation and The Red Cross.
The exhibition will be open from 9:30am to 5:00pm daily (with special late nights on Fridays until 8:00pm). Tickets will be available at the door but to avoid lengthy queues, tickets can be pre-purchased through Ticketek on 132849 (www.ticketek.com.au). A highly informative electronic audio guide can be hired providing even greater detailed descriptions of many of the displays.
An exclusive preview of the exhibition will be held for all school teachers (registration will be required with identification) from 12 noon to 8pm on Thursday, August 31, 2006. All media outlets are invited to attend this session. Interviews and personalised tours can be organised on request.
Special evening viewings and networking functions can also be organised on request for special interest groups such as sporting clubs, art schools, corporations, social clubs, drug companies and medical organisations.
In most cases the exhibits can take 2 hours to view. See www.amazinghumanbody.com.au for details.

There was a series on SBS while you were away called "Anatomy for beginners" by Dr. Gunther von Hagens. Unfortunately only 4 shows and on at 10:40pm but facinating viewing.
He did skeleton, circulation, digestion & reproduction with full disections of human bodies.

A mate of mine went to the same exhibition in Europe - he said it was amazing and definitely worth it. He is a scientist so was speaking from a scientific/medical viewpoint.
My daughter went when it was in Sinny. She thought it was good (she's in her final year of her Bachelor of Nursing).
