    I've lived in Gippsland these forty years and it is pronounced with a G as in Golf, but the original question is a bit confusing as the G in 'golf' is a hard G and the G in 'gaol' is a soft G.

    I think when people say 'proNOUNciation they are having a little joke. It's a kind of internal contradiction. Irony, if you will- but is that with a silent 'R'?

    I knew a Fahey family many years ago and they had always called themselves 'Fay' but after a holiday in Ireland they started pronouncing it 'Far-hee'.

    When your name is Smith, you can call yourself Fotherington-Smythe if you wish, but you'll always be Smith to me....


    I note that the incoming AG of the USA is one Pam Bondi. Guess how many Aussies will pronounce her name incorrectly. Or, perhaps, it's her pronunciation is incorrect? Bond-e? Whichever, she'd fit right in on her namesake beach

    So, is the dipthong in Rous (e.g. River in NSW) pronounced as in 'Noose', 'House', 'Nose', or 'Loss'? Or is the word pronounced 'Row-us' ?
