    Pronunciation

Is Gippsland pronounced with a soft “g” as in golf or a hard “g” as in gaol?

I could be wrong, but I thought “g” as in golf.

    Hopefully the locals know

Mind you, out here nobody agrees on the town called Lucknow.... Luck Now, or Luck Know. My parents and I think Luck Now, my Grandparents think Luck Know. Even the town locals are divided.

As above, it has always (at least since I was in primary school over 75 years ago and learned about giant earthworms!) been a hard g as in golf, despite the fact that you would expect the following 'i' to soften it.

I assume it is because Governor Gipps pronounced his name that way, after the area being given the name by Strzelecki, whose expedition was sponsored by Gipps.

I've always pronounced it as Gippsland.

    A soft 'G'.

    Interesting thread...

I'll point out one of my frustrations.

It's often pronounced (or is that pronunced )"pronounciation" by many.

The conversation never goes any further in my mind, I get stuck right there.
