This is where the boys miss Mario looking for a Car

Hi my son Brendon is looking for a car in Japan, he wants what they call a K Car. He rang me telling that he made a list of things to ask and if I knew anything else.
He said this is where dad would know what to ask if he was still here. He has made a very good list of thing he has to watch out for and ask.
I think he has learnt a lot from Mario when we where looking for cars for the boys and when he went with us to look at Land Rovers.
If he does buy a car he will be able to use his car parking space at his unit. He is paying an extra $60 for 2 car spaces at the unit on top of his rent, the other space is will be for his girl friend, when she moves from Hokkaido, and no she is not Japanese, she comes from Colorado.

Well it looks like he has bought a car it is a 2007 Daihatsu Move 4wd ctv car, with 80,000 ks on the clock. It has been well looked after and comes with 2 year shaken, for one that dont know cars have to go through a complete over haul and I mean every thing every, I think 3 years which can cost quite a lot to go through. That why you see a lot of new cars on the road as it is cheaper to buy a new car every so many years that paying for it to have a complete over haul. And this car has a lot more room and head height for Brendon as he is over 6 feet tall. He paid 3000 for it and will have to get insurance for it he wont be picking it up until next weekend. He will have to buy snow tyres for it when winter comes, so he can drive it up to the snow which is every close to him now that he has moved to Nagano.

I think your son has bought well as my mate was a mechanic and he liked Daihatsus and owned two of them.

The three year overall rule is how companies here get the "grey imports" from Japan. I nearly bought a Toyota Surf as I wanted a turbo diesel automatic wagon and bought a D2 instead as someone told me "grey" parts could be difficult to obtain.

Well Brendon will pick up his car on Saturday 31st. And has organize insurance for the car, total coverage, it is costing $80 per month, he did shop around but they where all the same money or a bit more. It is just that he has never had insurance before. But next year it will drop down quite a bit, also in April he will get his gold license, this level means that he has no violation or accidents for 5 years . You start off on green which means you are new driver, and the blue means you are a standard driver. So with his gold license it will drop a lot, also if I went over there I could drive his car as it covers family member over 26 years old. Also Brendon sent me a lovely long message that made me tear up a bit,as it was 3 years since Mario passed away 27/5/22, and he rang me last night as well. I am so glad that I have such wonderful and caring sons.

We all miss Mario, on multiple levels. He will not be forgotten for a long time.

The Shakken (registration tax) gets quite high, and the car prices get quite low as a result, on older vehicles. When I loved there we used to look for 'ponkatsu' (junkyard jalopies) often for 50,000 yen for 6-12 months, as a mini or even some k-cars. I'd say he has done well as Daihatsu's thst ahead and older I've seen running around as recently as a year ago summer when last I visited, they do well with pretty straight forward regular maintenance.

One added note, his girlfriend may be aware of from her time in Hokkaido.........when the Shakken does run out, often a solid vehicle can be driven on a 'tour' eventually heading to Hokkaido, and sold to Russian entrepreneurs who load them on ships to get them elsewhere for an extended life. Many expats used the money to fund their tour around in their vehicle and their trip home after delivery. I'm nit sure whether this is still running or not given all the geopolitical changes but if it is many a roadtrip/adventure has been paid for with such a sale at the end of it. Something he may want to look forward to when it's time to go get another vehicle (and avoid paying the increased Shakken).

Yes Brendon will be looking ahead for a newer car before the it has to have a shaken done. It was lucky that he found one with a long shaken on it. He could only afford 3000. Due to him moving from Tokashumia to Nagano (583KM) and the cost of moving and the new unit with the out lay of rent for 2 months, and his 2 parking spaces at the unit etc. And yes Brendon did have some of his friends left to go back home and they sold there car on. Her car she will be bring to Nagano when she moves in.
