I think it's W, not V.
I'd say you have a disco 1 with v8 there, and a late one at that, or an almost improbable D2 v8 there.
Either way the G = Discovery
The first M is a mystery to me
The second M = v8
The 7 = 5 speed manual & RH drive
The W = year of build ... ie. '98
The A = build type, in this case UK(if it were rest of world it'd be a F, or Sth Africa it'd be a G)
The last six numbers is just the serial number of that body/chassis.
There should be SAL which equate to Landrover, and then most likely LJ, which equates to the model series, LJ is Disco1. If you have LT(after the SAL) then you have a super duper early D2.
So I think your VIN should look like SALLJGMM7WA(six digits). If so, you have a 98 build D1 with v8. Note that on the compliance plate it could well have a 99 year identifaction, and in Aus, it'lll be known as a 99 model, even tho it was actually built in 98.
I have this problem sometimes when trying to find 'regular' parts ... like filters, or rubbers or wipers or whatever(usually online).
A 99 disco is normally a D2, so parts come up wrong when I search. I just close the webpage for that search, it's easier.
Arthur.
All these discos are giving me a heart attack!
